Picture Perfect: 2013 Panini Golden Age Exhibit Box Toppers

Simply put, the 2013 Panini Golden Age Exhibit box toppers are some of the most striking cards of the year. They don't use foil, memorabilia or any other razzle dazzle. They don't have much of a glossy finish. They're not even in color. It's all about photography.

Inserted in a special pack in every 2013 Panini Golden Age Baseball hobby box, Exhibit cards follow the same pop culture patterns as the base set. There's a fair amount of baseball but also lots from the worlds of politics, pop culture and other sports. Measuring 3.5" by 5.5", the over-sized cards have subjects that cover the first three quarters of the 20th Century.

The design is simple. Card fronts have a full-bleed black and white photo with a name and a brief description of their accomplishments. Backs have a name, number, a bit of fine print and a ton of white space.

The key to the 2013 Panini Golden Age Exhibit cards is the photo selection. Every shot captures both the subject and their personality (at least their public persona). For example, John Belushi stands at a shimmering mic stand decked out in his Blues Brothers suit against a near black backdrop. Stuntman Evel Knievel sits on his motorcycle, conveniently parked in front of a fountain that reads "No Parking." Harry Houdini stands bound, ready to jump into the water for another daring escape. The compelling shots continue throughout the 40-card checklist.

For those looking to decorate an office, man cave or entertainment room, the larger format also makes them suitable for framing.

Like much of the 2013 Panini Golden Age checklist, the Exhibit box toppers have their roots in the past. Between 1947 and 1966, the exhibit supply company produced similar photos. These are still popular with collectors today.

Below is a full gallery of the entire set as well as a checklist pointing out what area of sports or pop culture they come from.
