Product Details
Few comic characters are more important and recognizable than the Man of Steel. 2013 Cryptozoic Superman: The Legend takes the iconic character's legacy and gives it the modern trading card spin.
It has been several years since the hobby has had a set dedicated solely to Superman. While he has been a major part of broader sets based on the Justice League and the world of DC Comics, collectors have to go back to 2006 Topps Superman Returns. Even that is based on a film and not the comics.
2013 Cryptozoic Superman: The Legend is a 63-card set that focuses on the iconic super hero, his friends and his foes. The set features newly commissioned artwork. Card backs are written by DC Comics veteran, Adam Beechen. The base set also has foil (1:8 packs) and Printing Plate (1:576 packs) parallels.
The insert chase is led by sketch cards, which fall approximately one per box. Other inserts include Alternate Reality foil cards (1:12 packs), Secret Origins puzzles (1:12 packs), Women of the Superman Universe (1:12 packs) and X-Ray Vision Cards (1:24 packs).
Sold separately, a full-color binder comes with an exclusive promo card.
A total of 40 Oversized Sketch Cards have been inserted as redemptions. In true comics style, all are "jams" featuring a team-up of a pair of artists.

Product Review
2013 Cryptozoic Superman: The Legend Product Review
Reviewed by Ryan Cracknell
Good: Fresh artwork. Whether it's the different artists or the many card types, there's tons of variety throughout. Perfect amount of inserts.
Bad: Some of the basic inserts are a little plain.
The Bottom Line: 2013 Cryptozoic Superman: The Legend hits on every front. It's affordable, looks great and has lots going on without being overwhelming. It's a fitting tribute to the Man of Steel. With the many sets focusing on Superman throughout the years, this one easily ranks as one of the best.
Card Design: 4.5/5.0
I feel like I'm starting to repeat myself, but after going years with recycled artwork in comic-based trading card sets, Cryptozoic should be commended for changing that. Base cards use all-new artwork commissioned specifically for the set. There are a few different styles but all stay true to the comic. The foil parallels are fairly standard, especially for Cryptozoic's DC sets. It certainly adds some pop to the already colorful cards.
The X-Ray Vision inserts are some of the most fun I've had with cards in a long time. Shaped like the iconic Superman shield, the image is revealed when you press the card between your hands. The backs have a nice retro vibe to them.
The other basic inserts are more bland. Secret Origin and Alternate Worlds have a foil finish like the parallel cards. The Women of Superman integrate some gold foil. While I like the place these play in expanding the set as a whole, these feel more like base cards than inserts.
Checklist: 5.0/5.0
The depth that 2013 Cryptozoic Superman: The Legend includes is excellent. The base set covers a lot of ground. The inserts, even though most are somewhat plain, add an extra layer. As someone who has seen more Superman movies than read the regular comics (I prefer the special mini series like Superman: For All Seasons and multi-hero epics like Kingdom Come), I appreciate the encyclopedic take of the set.
Value: 4.5/5.0
In no way did I feel shorted busting Superman: The Legend. While some of Cryptozoic's products feel bland in part because they have so few inserts, this set finds the right balance. Even if I'm not planning on chasing some of them, they break up the monotony and feel like you get a little extra. The level of care that was put into the set is also apparent, nailing the small details that make it even easier to appreciate.
The promise of a quality sketch card in every box helps ensure collectors get something unique every time.
And while you shouldn't expect one going in, there are also printing plates and oversized sketch card redemptions.
Not advertised, I also pulled a redemption for a digital Superman comic. This was another nice touch.
The Fun Factor: 4.5/5.0
In case you haven't noticed, I had a blast with 2013 Cryptozoic Superman: The Legend. It looks good, it covers a lot of ground and it's informative. The release finds that nice balance of the right amount of extras. The inserts are attainable. At the same time, they're not distracting. Given the reasonable price, it's tough to see how anyone with even the smallest amount of interest in Superman wouldn't enjoy it.
