2009-10 Topps Basketball Review
Summary
The Good: 2009-10 Topps Basketball is every bit as good as the company's surprise hit of the year, 2009 Topps Baseball. Great design and photography, along with a huge offering of parallels and inserts (most notably 2009-10 Topps Chrome Basketball) and a reasonable price tag combine to make 2009-10 Topps Basketball a winner of all fronts.
The Bad: The assortment and quantity of autographs in 2009-10 Topps Basketball is subpar. While HTA jumbo boxes promise an autograph and two game used cards per box, standard hobby boxes of 2009-10 Topps Basketball only contain an average of two game used cards and no autographs. I love the way that Topps Chrome was incorporated into the set, however I would have liked to see more of it.
The Bottom Line: I'm first and foremost a baseball and football card collector who occasionally buys a basketball card product every few months when I want to change things up a bit. Up until I broke a box of 2009-10 Topps Basketball for this review, none of the basketball products I've came across have compelled me to come back for more. It brought back the memories of how much I enjoyed collecting basketball cards as a kid and has me seriously considering working more basketball products into my sports card rotation.
2009-10 Topps Basketball is sure to appeal to a wide range of collectors, and at just over $50 per box its one of the most affordable products available on the market.
Design
2009-10 Topps Basketball features a sleek design that is coupled with some fantastic photography. There are a number of great action shots throughout the base set. It is evident that a lot of time and energy went into capturing quality photographs to adorn the cards.
In the age of 1/1's, cut autographs, and quad autographed memorabilia cards, I sometimes forget to take in the images depicted on cards - especially base cards. I stopped a good dozen times during my box break to carefully take in the awesome photography that the set has to offer. Whoever was responsible for the photography in this set deserves a raise, as it adds so much to the base set.
Value
Considering the low price point of 2009-10 Topps Basketball, its hard to go wrong with it. It would have been nice to see more autographs in the set, but even so 2009-10 Topps Basketball is still an affordable, value-packed product.
Checklist
No complaints in this department. 2009-10 Topps Basketball features all of the top NBA Rookies for the 2009-10 Season, as well as all the requisite stars and role players currently playing in the NBA. My main gripe with the checklist was the collation of the cards in my particular box. I pulled entirely too many doubles, and even some triples. Hopefully this was an issue with my particular box rather then the production run as a whole.
Box Break
I love breaking packs, and 2009-10 Topps Basketball had plenty of them to keep me busy. Here are the highlights of my break:
