Product Details
Once 1992 SkyBox Marvel Masterpieces helped open the floodgates for premium Marvel sets, Fleer/SkyBox tried a number of different releases focused on specific properties. 1994 Fleer Ultra X-Men is one such set. Combining painted art and several styles of chase cards, the premium set remains a standout today.
1994 Fleer Ultra X-Men was released amidst the buzz of the popular Saturday morning cartoon. The base set is fairly large, especially by today's standards, at 150 cards. While much of the set focuses on characters, there are also subsets for classic story lines, epic battles and bitter rivals.
The release has art from a massive lineup of artists. Among them are Earl Norem, Julie Bell, John Romita Sr, Greg and Tim Hildebrandt, Dan Brereton and Erik Larsen. Card fronts highlight their work, offering very little in the way of additional graphics. A corner is cut off to act as a nameplate, which has both the set's logo and the character's name in gold foil.
Besides regular hobby packs, 1994 Fleer Ultra X-Men has jumbo and WalMart packs. Each has its own configuration and inserts.
Between all of its various pack types, the release has five insert sets. Team Portrait is a nine-card puzzle. When put together it makes a massive collage of characters. Fatal Attractions, X-Men's Greatest Battles and Silver X-Over all use foil to highlight their designs. Exclusive to WalMart packs, Team Triptych cards combine to form two different three-card puzzles.
Hobby cases also come with a set of five Ultra Prints. These are over-sized cards with more painted artwork.
Interest in 1994 Fleer Ultra X-Men remains strong today, thanks in large part to the high quality of both the cards and the artwork. It certainly helps that the set also has a decent background on one of the most popular comic book teams of all-time. And while sets certainly cost more than a lot of modern sets, it's still a largely affordable release.
