In the '90s, Fleer/SkyBox tried a number of different Marvel releases focused on specific properties. 1994 Fleer Ultra X-Men is one such set. Combining painted art and several styles of chase cards, the Premiere Edition series remains a standout today.

Of course, 1992 SkyBox Marvel Masterpieces helped open the floodgates for premium Marvel sets.

1994 Fleer Ultra X-Men Trading Cards Set Details

1994 Fleer Ultra X-Men was released amidst the buzz of the popular Saturday morning cartoon. The base set is fairly large, especially by today's standards, at 150 cards. While much of the set focuses on characters, there are also subsets for classic storylines, epic battles and bitter rivals.

1994 Fleer Ultra X-Men Trading Cards 1

The release has art from a massive lineup of artists. Among them are Earl Norem, Julie Bell, John Romita Sr, Greg and Tim Hildebrandt, Dan Brereton and Erik Larsen. Card fronts highlight their work, offering very little in the way of additional graphics. A corner is cut off to act as a nameplate, which has both the set's logo and the character's name in gold foil.

Besides regular hobby packs, 1994 Fleer Ultra X-Men has jumbo and Walmart packs. Each has its own configuration and inserts.

Between all of its various pack types, the release has five insert sets. Team Portrait is a nine-card puzzle. When put together it makes a massive collage of characters. Fatal Attractions, X-Men's Greatest Battles and Silver X-Over all use foil to highlight their designs.

1994 Fleer Ultra X-Men Trading Cards 2

Exclusive to Walmart packs, Team Triptych cards combine to form two different three-card puzzles.

1994 Fleer Ultra X-Men Trading Cards 3

Hobby cases also come with a set of five Ultra Prints. These are oversized cards with more painted artwork.

1994 Fleer Ultra X-Men Trading Cards 4

Interest in 1994 Fleer Ultra X-Men remains strong today, thanks in large part to the high quality of both the cards and the artwork. It certainly helps that the set also has a decent background on one of the most popular comic book teams of all-time. And while sets certainly cost more than a lot of modern sets, it's still a largely affordable release.

This set and the following 1995 fleer ultra X-men cards set (not to be confused with the Kubert junk chrome sets) are the best of the past marvel card lines that were printed. I have enjoyed this set since it’s first release.
This checklist however is missing a little information: there is also a REGULAR size uncut 9 card sheet ASIDE from the mini 9 card sheet. Also not mentioned, is the location to find the 3 uncut card insert panels located in select X-men comics. X-men #30 houses the Jean and Scott wedding panel. Uncanny X-men #310 houses the X-Factor team Panel and for the life of me I can’t recall which issue had the Excalibur panel…

This set was the first in my start to collect comic related cards. The artwork and information on the cards is amazing and highly detailed. One note is that card #98 Iceman Original Team has two versions. One with the number on the back, and the error variant without the number. Only one set is hard to obtain, and that is the Silver X-Over set.

The absolute most beautiful artwork I’ve ever seen marvel trading cards. One very funny thing about this set is that I opened a lot of packs as a kid and not once did I get a duplicate card. I don’t know if this was an anomaly or what.

I collected this and the 1995 set as a kid. I still have them. They are all in sleeve pages which I employed immediately after opening these packs. Can anybody get me in touch with somebody with a price list.
