User Rating:

It can be a tall task for any product based around a weaker rookie class to follow up a very popular release that is stacked with top rookies. 1987-88 Fleer Basketball floated under the radar for many years, overshadowed by the iconic 1986-87 Fleer. Although it will never match the historic rookie class of its predecessor, 1987-88 Fleer Basketball is an underrated product.

Featuring a much lower print run than the previous year, 1987-88 Fleer Basketball is also one of the smaller basketball sets with 132 base cards. While the base design has not aged especially well, something about the simple look and gray color scheme seems to work and is a considerable design change from the previous year.

The top options from the set are the many Hall of Fame base cards, especially Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, Larry Bird, and, most notably, Michael Jordan. The Larry Bird card has proven difficult to locate in high grade, adding to the interest. While the key rookies are not quite household names, there is still some quality, including Brad Daughtery, A.C. Green, Ron Harper, Detlef Schrempf and Otis Thorpe, among others.

The only other component of 1987-88 Fleer Basketball are the Stickers inserts. Falling 1 per pack, the patriotic-themed stickers cover some of the biggest names in the sport, featuring Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. Each pack also comes with a stick of gum.

Although prices for ungraded cards remain fairly reasonable, high grades result in a significant premium. Gem Mint (i.e. PSA 10) copies for Michael Jordan can reach around $3,000+ and Larry Bird can go for similar amounts. While there are several typical issues common of cards produced during this period, centering problems are the most widespread.

Adding to the allure, unopened boxes command strong values and are tough to locate. The box breakdown is 36 packs of 12 cards and one sticker.

User Reviews

  1. Not the greatest design but solid. A nice set with cheaper, earlier cards of the top stars. Second-year cards of Jordan, Malone, Olajuwon, Barkley, and Ewing help slightly offset the lackluster RC crop. The set is certainly more affordable for a lot of collectors, vis-a-vis 1986-87 Fleer. Worth seeking out and owning.

  2. I give this decent looking set 4 stars because it is a very nice alternative to the rather expensive 86-87 Fleer set.
I like the use of gray on the cards and the photos are decent also.
