Trading Card Swag and Exclusives at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con

The 2012 San Diego Comic-Con is here. Amidst all the Hollywood panels and spandex costumes, card collectors have several things to track down. Whether you're on site or shopping from a safe distance, here are some of the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con trading card exclusives that have been announced and uncovered thus far.

Topps - Mars Attacks

Trading Card Swag and Exclusives at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con 1Mars Attacks is invading San Diego in a big way. For card collectors, the highlight is a nine-card promo puzzle featuring artwork from John McCrea. He is the artist currently working on the Mars Attacks comic. To get the complete set, collectors will need to visit the following booths:

Abrams Publishing has 150 limited edition copies of their upcoming Mars Attacks bookTrading Card Swag and Exclusives at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con 2, which is not scheduled for regular release until October. The limited edition version is numbered and signed by both Len Brown and Zina Saunders. Brown was one of the franchise's co-creators and wrote the book's introduction. Saunders is the daughter of Norm Saunders, the pulp artist who did the final artwork for the classic set in the 1960s.

Saturday will see a Mars Attacks panel discussion. John Layman, the writer of the Mars Attacks comic, will be one of the guests.

Rittenhouse Archives

Although Rittenhouse Archives won't be on-hand at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con, they did make four exclusive promo cards for the event, one for each day of the show:

 Breygent Mystery Packs

2012 marks the third year that Breygent has produced Mystery Packs specifically for the San Diego Comic-Con. For around $30, each 2012 Breygent SDCC Mystery Pack comes with three hits and at least four promo cards. Cards come from Breygent's many licenses, including Dexter, Vampirella, Transformers, Red Sonja and Warlords of Mars. Some of the announced highlights include the following:

Cryptozoic

Cryptozoic is opening up shop -- literally -- for the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con. They've got a temporary shop at the nearby Gaslamp District just for the event. The shop carries the just-released set based on the Walking Dead comic. Cryptozoic also made a special Walking Dead comic binder package for Comic-Con. Available both at their shop and with dealers, the limited edition release comes with an exclusive binder and base set. It also has a foil promo not available anywhere else.

The store will host sketch card artist Brandon Kenney on Friday. Tim Shay, another artist, will be in Saturday afternoon. Walking Dead TV show actor, Steven Yeun, will also be at the Cryptozoic shop on Saturday afternoon.

Promo cards for various Cryptozoic sets will also be handed out at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con:

Cryptozoic is also hosting an exclusive event for 40 collectors on Saturday morning. They'll be giving away lots of prizes and have several sketch card artists. The intimate gathering is already full. Confirmed artists for the get together include Shay, George Davis, Marat Mychaels, Dan Schoening and Jason Worthington.

Upper Deck

The Upper Deck booth at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con will have a large focus on their Super Hero Squad Trading Card Game. They'll be selling six coins made specifically for the event. Each coin has a different member of the Avengers.

The company is also hosting a handful of sketch card artists who have worked on their Marvel trading card sets.Babisu Kourtis, Brian “Kaiser” Tillman, Sanford Greene, Elvin Hernandez, Cruddie Torian and Achilles Kokkinakis will all be creating original artwork at the show and will be handed out free.

Collectors can find Upper Deck at booth 5617.

Geek a Week

Len Peralta's Geek a Week project was an indie card hit. For the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con, Discovery Channel commissioned a set of six Mythbusters cards. Every set also comes with one of three dog tags ("Confirmed" is rare).

If past years are any indication, collectors can expect to find a ton of other trading cards throughout the event. Many will be promos not necessarily related to a specific set, but rather different products.
