The Envelope Please: Autograph Cards of the 2013 Academy Award Nominees

The  2013 Academy Award nominations are out. Whether they're deserving or not is always a matter of personal preference. It's also a good excuse to look over the lists and see who has autographed trading cards. None of the films with major nominations have their own sets, so collectors have to look elsewhere and into the past for autographs of the 2013 Oscar nominees.

This year, there are eight nominees with autographed trading cards, not a bad number considering most are now A-list superstars. An Oscar victory can mean a huge bump in prices (at least immediately following Oscar night) and some stability over the long-term.

Here's a look at the eight nominees with certified autographs from entertainment trading cards as well as what sets you can find them in. You can shop for cards by clicking on the nominees' names.

Bradley Cooper, Silver Linings Playbook - Best Actor

  • 2002 Inkworks Alias Season 1

Bradley Cooper has come a long way from his supporting roles in Alias, a sexy spy thriller that helped launch the careers of Jennifer Garner and J.J. Abrams as well. He's appeared in several blockbusters over the last decade (and plenty of stinkers), including The Wedding Crashers and The Hangover. He was also named People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive.

Hugh Jackman, Les Miserables - Best Actor

  • 2000 Topps X-Men
  • 2004 Comic Images Van Helsing
  • 2006 Rittenhouse X-Men: The Last Stand - six-case incentive
  • 2009 Rittenouse X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Hugh Jackman has been one of Hollywood's biggest stars for a while now. He carries the full package when it comes to the ability to shift from action star to serious dramatic actor. He also hosted the Oscars back in 2009. Despite Jackman's long-standing fame, he is no stranger to the hobby thanks to his role as Wolverine in the X-Men films. He also signed for Comic Images set based on the utterly dreadful Van Helsing.

Tommy Lee Jones, Lincoln - Best Supporting Actor

  • 2002 Inkworks Men in Black II -Redemption

It's hard to believe that it has already been two decades since Tommy Lee Jones took home an Oscar for The Fugitive. He's up for his second trophy for his role as Thaddeus Stevens in Lincoln. The actor signed a small number of cards for the Men in Black II set made by Inkworks. The card was a redemption so don't expect to find any if you stumble across a cheap box.

Jennifer Lawrence, Silver Linings Playbook - Best Actress

  • 2012 NECA The Hunger Games - Walmart DVD Launch Party

Jennifer Lawrence can do no wrong in Hollywood right now, thanks in large part to her role as Katniss in The Hunger Games. Despite being just 22, this is already Lawrence's second nomination. She was also up for an Oscar a couple of years ago for Winter's Bone. Lawrence's lone autograph card comes from special packs given out at Wal-mart Hunger Games DVD launch parties. The card is extremely rare and pricey. Numbered A1, one sold in October for $750.

Seth MacFarlane, Ted - Best Original Song

  • 2005 Inkworks Family Guy Season 1 - Redemption

Seth MacFarlane has a good chance of being the most talked about person following the 2013 Academy Awards. The Family Guy creator is not only nominated for writing a piece that's up for Best Original Song, but he's also the show's host. MacFarlane was the headline signer for 2005 Inkworks Family Guy Season 1. The card was a redemption so the secondary market is your only chance of landing one now.

Steven Spielberg - Lincoln - Best Director

  • 2008 Topps Indiana Jones Heritage
  • 2008 Topps Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
  • 2008 Topps Indiana Jones Masterpieces

Simply put, Steven Spielberg is a legend. Director of countless blockbusters, he's up for another Oscar with his Abraham Lincoln biopic. Although both are extremely rare to the tune of less than ten copies each, Spielberg has autographs in two sets. His  signature is lurking in Indiana Jones Heritage and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, both released by Topps in 2008. If you're looking to buy one, expect to pay four figures. There is also a one-of-one triple autograph from Indiana Jones Masterpieces signed by Spielberg, George Lucas and Harrison Ford. It's currently listed on eBay for $18,000.

Quentin Tarantino, Django Unchained - Best Original Screenplay

  • 2008 Donruss Americana II #/93
  • 2009 Donruss Americana Celebrity Cuts #/50

Although Tarantino missed out on a Best Director nomination for Django Unchained, he did get a nod for writing its screenplay. One of the most popular and influential directors of the last 25 years, Tarantino signed for a pair of Americana sets released by Donruss in 2008 and 2009. It looks as though Inkworks was hoping to get him to sign for an Alias set as an unsigned card has surfaced from the company's vault following their closure.

John Williams, Lincoln - Best Original Score

  • 2007 Topps Star Wars 30th Anniversary

Usually, pulling an autograph from someone working behind the scenes is a bit of a letdown. Not so for John Williams, who is up Best Original Score for Lincoln. The legendary composer has created countless classic scores over the years, including Star Wars, E.T. - The Extra Terrestrial, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter and Indiana Jones. Topps landed his autograph for 2007 Star Wars 30th Anniversary.

I was the purchaser and now proud owner of that Jennifer Lawrence card. It’s changed hands twice but so far it’s the only example ever seen. The sky’s the limit for Miss Lawrence’s career and that card’s value.

Very cool list. I am surprised that after all these years, nobody has made a genuine attempt at a definitive Simpsons set. The guest star list is enormous, and both the chase cards and base set could be really well done.
