Pittsburgh Pirates Collecting and Fan Guide
Overview
The long tradition and history of the Pittsburgh Pirates presents plenty of opportunities for collectors. The team has been home to some of the games all-time great players in Roberto Clemente and Honus Wagner. Wagner alone presents a myriad of hobby options, particularly for those collectors with deep pockets. The resurgent youth movement that saw the club return to the post-season, also provides prospectors, rookie card and team collectors with the perfect opportunity to start investing in the team's top prospects.
Founded in 1882, it didn't take long for the team to become competitive and they played in the very first World Series in 1903. Despite losing to Boston, five games to three, the team retooled and eventually claimed their first championship in 1909.
Through the 1920's, the team added two additional National League pennants and a World Series championship before the organization struggled through decades of futility. However, the Pirates returned to the World Series in 1960 and won in seven games thanks to one of the most memorable moments in World Series history. The Pirates and Yankees were tied in the ninth inning of game seven when Bill Mazeroski homered to seal the team's third overall World Series title.
The 1970s delivered two more World Series victories, thanks in large part to Willie Stargell and Dave Parker. The chemistry exhibited by the 1979 team in particular, earned the club the moniker, "We Are Family," after the disco hit of the era. Free agency, low attendance, and some mistakes in the draft had an adverse impact on the team for several years following their 1979 World Series win.
Today, the club has been rebuilt from the ground up with a heavy emphasis on identifying, recruiting and acquiring top prospects via the draft and trades. With a core group of players that is anchored by MLB standout Andrew McCutchen, the organization has once again put themselves into contention for the Fall Classic.
