Overview
The Pittsburgh Penguins have been home to some of the league's greatest all-time players, including Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr and Sidney Crosby. Led by these superstars, the Penguins have won three Stanley Cup championships in their history and are a clear favorite among collectors.
The early years of the organization were marked with considerable growing pains. Team management relied on aging journeyman, well past their prime, to fill the roster. As a result, the team struggled on the ice and were mired in the bottom portion of the standings.
The Penguins franchise has overcome numerous obstacles through the years, such as the death of promising star Michael Brière, cancer diagnosis for multiple players, bankruptcy, and other uncommon situations. Being from a blue-collar town like Pittsburgh, the ownership group of the Penguins didn't allow these challenges to hinder their on-ice growth.
The drafting of Mario Lemieux in 1984 forever changed the fortunes of the team. This was true not only on the ice, but off of it as well. Lemieux would lead the Penguins to back-to-back Stanley Cup titles in 1991 and 1992. In 1999, he would save the team from their second bankruptcy by becoming a majority shareholder in a buyout approved by the league and the court system.
The Penguins remained competitive for several years, hosting a number of high-profile free agents. However, it was the arrival of Evgeni Malkin in 2004 and Sidney Crosby in 2005, that would position the franchise for their next title run. Led by those young stars, the Pittsburgh Penguins won the Stanley Cup in 2008. The addition of standout players like Jordan Staal and Kris Letang have helped to ensure that the organization will reamin near the top of the NHL Eastern Conference for years to come.
