Overview
The Philadelphia Phillies have faced their share of struggles since the organization's founding in 1883. Of the original 16 teams to comprise Major League Baseball at the start of the World Series era in 1903, no other team took longer to win their first World Series than the Phillies. Although it was not until 1980 that the City of Brotherly Love saw their team crowned World Series champions, the Phillies have been a popular team for collectors for some time.
Led by such stars as Pete Rose, Larry Bowa, Steve Carlton and homegrown prospect, Mike Schmidt, the Phillies ' teams of the early-1980s were as entertaining a team as there was in all of baseball. They combined a talented pitching staff with solid fundamentals and a potentially explosive offense to end the team's 77-year postseason drought.
Despite the team's general lack of postseason success, the Phillies have had a tremendous number of stars make their mark on baseball while playing for the organization. Some of the notable names for collectors include Robin Roberts, Richie Ashburn, Dick 'Richie" Allen, Jim Bunning and Greg Luzinski, just to name a few.
The Philadelphia Phillies have undergone a rebuilding process in recent years that saw the club win five consecutive division titles between 2007 and 2011. Anchored by stars groomed in the club's farm system, the Phillies won their second championship in 2008. Players like Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins have emerged as legit stars, helping to make the Phillies competitive, year-in and year-out.
