New York Rangers Collecting and Fan Guide

New York Rangers

Franchise Founded: 1926
Championships: 4
Team Collectibility Rating: 7.5

The New York Rangers play in the home of the NHL's largest market. As a result, the franchise's high profile and deep pockets has afforded them the opportunity to sign numerous legends of the game in their pursuit of ticket revenues and postseason success. Names like Mark Messier, Wayne Gretzky, Jaromir Jagr, Rick Nash and Martin St. Louis are just a handful of players the organization has signed to lucrative free agent deals through the years, and these stars are a huge reason the Rangers remain an appealing option for collectors.

As an 'Original Six' franchise, the Rangers have a storied history steeped with tradition, media spotlight and postseason drama. During the club's first 14 years in the league, they won the Stanley Cup championships. After their win in 1940, it would be 54 years before fans of the New York Rangers would once again see their team hoisting The Cup.

The 1993-94 Rangers, led by veteran Captain Mark Messier, defeated the Vancouver Canucks in seven games. The victory was not only the first for the franchise in the modern era but resulted in many other notable accomplishments. Messier became the first player to captain two different teams to a Stanley Cup championship. Brian Leetch became the first American-born player to win the Conn Smythe Award as the series' Most Valuable Player.

The timing of the Rangers' victory coincided with the recent fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union. As a result, the NHL saw an influx of Russian-born players that was referred to in professional hockey circles as the "Russian Invasion." The Rangers added four of these transplants and they became the first Russian-born players to have their names engraved on The Cup. This group includes Alexander Karpovtsev, Alexei Kovalev, Sergei Nemchinov, and Sergei Zubov.
