New York Mets Collecting and Fan Guide
Overview
Typically painted as the jealous younger brother of the New York Yankees, the New York Mets may not be the most popular team in their own town, but they still have a strong legion of fans and collectors.
The New York Mets entered the league in 1962 as part of baseball's expansion era. A large portion of the league's decision was based upon the departure of the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants for the West Coast. What a lot of people are not aware is that the team's colors of blue and orange are actually taken from the Dodgers and Giants, respectively. The team moniker is short for "Metropolitans," but nobody ever refers to them as such.
The Mets won their first World Series championship in 1969, earning the title of "Miracle Mets" for the dramatic comeback in the standings to steal the NL pennant from the Chicago Cubs. Led by young pitching aces Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman, the Mets would go on to win the World Series against the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles.
Several years would pass before the Mets would bring home their only other World Series title, to date. In 1986, the Mets faced off against the Boston Red Sox. They ultimately defeated the Sox in seven games, but not before a dramatic Game Six that saw the Mets come within one out of losing the series in a 16-inning classic. Many fans considered the 1986 team to be a reincarnation of the original "Miracle Mets" team.
Numerous Hall of Fame players and fan favorites have come and gone on the Mets' teams. From the early years of Tom Seaver to the recent days of David Wright, the Mets have always played with a chip on their shoulder. They seem to be consistently over-shadowed by the Bronx Bombers. The two clubs have their own heated rivalry that flares up every summer during interleague play.
