New York Islanders Collecting and Fan Guide

New York Islanders Collecting and Fan Guide

Overview

The New York Islanders dynasty of the 1980s secured the team's place in hockey history. It cemented a passionate fan base in a competitive media market and, more importantly, provided a wealth of opportunity for collectors.

The dynasty-era teams were led by several Hall of Fame players, including Denis Potvin, Mike Bossy and the legendary Bryan Trottier. Unlike many teams, the all-time greats of the New York Islanders all have rookie cards with the team. It is a true testament of the organization's ability to identify, acquire and retain homegrown talent.

Founded in 1972, the Islanders are one of three NHL teams that compete for fans in the metropolitan area of New York. After winning four consecutive Stanley Cups between 1980 and 1983, the franchise has had more than its fair share of problems. Lackluster results in the standings, mismanagement and low attendance have led to a decline in the organization's stature in the league.

The allure of adding aging veterans past their prime in an attempt to fill seats has backfired on the team on multiple occasions. This contributed significantly to the team's money woes by saddling the organization with high-priced contracts.

However, with the recent arrival of a group of young draft picks, led by John Tavares, the team is looking to return to their winning ways and rebuild a once proud franchise and fan base.
