Overview
Despite rough stretches in their first few decades, the New England Patriots have been one of the most consistently competitive teams since the mid-1990s. Three Super Bowl titles and a guaranteed Hall of Fame player at quarterback has led to strong collecting interest for the Patriots.
Originally the Boston Patriots of the AFL, the team became the New England Patriots after the AFL-NFL merger. Intermittent success in the 1970s and early-1980s gave way to a sizable losing stretch. However, an ownership change and several prominent coaches and players helped turn the team's fortunes.
The Patriots as we know them today came into being with Tom Brady at quarterback and Bill Belichick at head coach. The two brought the team three Super Bowl titles in four seasons and had all the makings of a dynasty. Although they still maintain prominent roles with the team, the Patriots have not managed a Super Bowl win since 2004. Most recently, the Pats were defeated by the New York Giants in both the 2008 and 2012 Super Bowl games. They are a legitimate threat for the title in most years and will likely continue to be as long as Brady remains active.
