Montreal Canadiens Collecting and Fan Guide

Montreal Canadiens

Franchise Founded: 1909
Championships: 24
Team Collectibility Rating: 9.0

The Montreal Canadiens are the most decorated team in the NHL with 24 Stanley Cup championships since the team's founding in 1909. The organization predates the NHL and is one of the oldest continuously operating sports franchises in North America. Given their considerable history and success, it should come as no surprise that the Canadiens are a prime spot for collectors.

The number of Hall of Fame Players that have suited up to play for the Habs is tantamount to hockey royalty. With names like George Vezina, Howie Morenz, Maurice 'Rocket" Richard, Jean Beliveau, Guy LaFluer and Guy Lapoint, just to name a few, fans of the Canadiens have come to expect great talent and winning hockey.

Despite the Canadiens storied history, Montreal is currently suffering through a championship drought that has now crossed the two decade mark. This used to be unheard of as the organization routinely advanced deep into the playoffs and won at least one title in every decade since their creation. This streak ended in the first decade of the new millennium.

The media scrutiny one experiences playing in Montreal is said to be unlike any other experience in professional sports. As a result, the team needs to not only focus on developing and attaining quality talent but also players with thick skin that can stand up to the media spotlight. If that isn't enough of a challenge, it is expected that the team's players be bilingual in French and English.

The organization is currently going through a rebuilding process led by a youth movement that consists of P.K. Subban, Brendan Gallagher and Alex Galchenyuk. Collectors and fans hope this core group will serve as the foundation for the Canadiens eventual return to postseason glory.
