Minnesota Wild Collecting and Fan Guide
Overview
The Minnesota Wild are one of the NHL's newest franchises and provide collectors a wealth of prospecting opportunities. A relatively young team, their roster is loaded with potential superstars, making many of their rookie cards a solid investment.
After the departure of the Minnesota North Stars to Dallas in 1993, the hockey-frenzied state was left without an NHL franchise. While the Wild were founded in 1997, it would not be until the start of the 2000-01 season that hockey-starved fans would see their new franchise take the ice for the first time.
The Minnesota Wild drafted Marian Gaborik as the 3rd overall pick in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. As their very first draft pick, he quickly became the face of the franchise and provided the Wild with a bonafide star. Gaborik became a cornerstone of the team as the front office assembled a legitimate contender. With a solid ownership group and astute front office, the Wild were almost instantly competitive. They would make their first playoff appearance in 2002-03, advancing all the way to the Western Conference Finals.
The Wild are currently powered by a core group of young talent that includes Zach Parise, Jason Pominville and Ryan Suter. Fans have much to look forward to as the team looks to capitalize on its consistent, year-over-year, improvement.
