Overview
Although the expectations and fan base won't be the same due to the departure of LeBron James, the Miami Heat are still a formidable franchise and offer collectors plenty of options despite a relatively short existence.
Established in 1988 as an expansion team, the team struggled for most of the their first decade in the league and boasted few stars outside of Glen Rice. Things changed for the better when Pat Riley was named the team president and head coach. Tim Hardaway and Alonzo Mourning made them a legit contender, but the team still could not nab their first title.
The 2003 NBA Draft marked the next huge moment for the franchise. Although they had the 5th overall pick, the Heat landed the second-best player in a draft widely considered to be one of the best of all-time. Dwyane Wade became the face of the team and helped lead them to the 2006 NBA title along with Shaquille O'Neal.
However, the biggest moment for fans and collectors came in 2010, when it was announced that Chris Bosh and LeBron James would join Wade to form one of the strongest starting lineups in the NBA. The Heat would reach the NBA finals in four consecutive years, winning two. Despite this success, the Heat were unable to re-sign James during the 2014 offseason.
Now that LeBron James has returned to Cleveland, many have written off the Miami Heat, but they sill have the talent to make some noise in the Eastern Conference. If Bosh and Wade remain healthy and the team can continue to win, Miami will remain relevant in the hobby.
