Overview
While recent years have not been fruitful for the Miami Dolphins, their rich history makes them a top team for collectors. Headlined by one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history and arguably the greatest season of all-time, the Dolphins remain prominently on the collecting radar.
The Miami Dolphins were established in 1966 as an AFL expansion team. Like most new teams, the Dolphins started off slow, but they turned it around very quickly. They were AFC champions in three consecutive years from 1971 to 1973. After losing their first Super Bowl appearance in 1971, the Dolphins won the ultimate prize in both 1972 and 1973.
Particularly noteworthy, the 1972 team is the only group to ever finish a season undefeated. The celebrated roster includes Hall of Fame players Bob Griese, Larry Csonkna and Paul Warfield, as well as head coach Don Shula. The entire 1972 team remains very popular on the collecting circuit.
In regards to overall teams success, this period marked the peak for the Miami Dolphins. After an inconsistent period, the team got back on track thanks to a new quarterback acquired in the 1983 NFL Draft. Dan Marino brought back the winning ways and is widely considered one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. Despite his accolades and consistent production, Marino was unable to bring another title back to Miami.
Although they had a few good season immediately after, since Dan Marino retired, the team has not been able to win consistently and only has made the playoffs three times since 2000. Seemingly in rebuilding mode for quite some time, fans and collectors hope that a period of resurgence is on the horizon.
