Los Angeles Kings Collecting and Fan Guide
Overview
Hardly an NHL juggernaut, the Los Angeles Kings are flying high with two recent Stanley Cup titles. This has made collectors take notice of the largely unsuccessful franchise and helped hockey maintain relevancy in a non-traditional market for the sport.
The Los Angeles Kings began play in 1967 after the NHL awarded franchises to six new teams. The longterm health and growth of the sport was dependent upon non-traditional hockey locales embracing the cold weather sport. The new ownership group assembled a competitive roster that saw minor success.
However, it wouldn't be until the acquisition of Wayne Gretzky in 1988 that the sport truly started to gain a foothold in the super competitive entertainment market of Southern California. The Great One introduced Los Angeles to a whole new level of hockey. The organization committed to winning and reached the Stanley Cup Finals in 1993. While the team would lose the series to the Montreal Canadians, the Kings proved that hockey could not only survive, but thrive in warm weather markets.
A period of financial hardship hit the team when then owner, Bruce McNall, plead guilty to several counts of fraud to obtain loans to keep the team afloat. He eventually had to sell the team and the new ownership group quickly realized that they could not afford some of their top players and were forced to drastically cut payroll to a level that left them without a competitive team for several years.
However, like many rags to riches stories, the organization eventually turned itself around and returned to contention in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Unfortunately, the constant quest for The Cup, eluded the team for several more years.
After continued retooling, several coaching changes and some key talent acquisitions through free agency and the NHL Draft, the Kings returned to contention in the later part of the 2000s. Finally, in 2011-12, the Los Angeles Kings hoisted the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history. The team would win their second championship just two short years later during the 2013-14 season.
