Competing for fans in the highly competitive sports entertainment market of Southern California has not been a problem for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The team has fielded a star-studded lineup in recent years, and are led by one of biggest names in baseball with Mike Trout. The current roster of stars combined with a decorated past makes the Angels a collecting favorite.
The Angels joined the league in 1961 and were owned by the famous signing cowboy, Gene Autry, for the first 36 years of their existence. The team has gone through many name changes in its history. Originally called the Los Angeles Angels, then being called the California Angels, then to the Anaheim Angels before their most recent change to the mouthful that is the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. However, most people have started to simply refer to them as the Los Angeles Angels.
The Angels have been home to numerous Hall of Fame players, including Reggie Jackson and Nolan Ryan. The franchise has never been afraid to spend money to acquire talent and as a result the list of star players who have donned the halo is extensive. However, the organization isn't simply built with a rent-a-player mentality. In actuality, the team's scouting department has been one of the best in baseball. Through the years, they have identified, acquired and developed home grown talent, including Troy Glaus, Jim Edmonds, Tim Salmon and Darin Erstad, just to name a few.
During Autry's tenure as owner, the Angels made the playoffs just three times but failed to win the A.L. pennant. Finally, in 2002, the team achieved the ultimate goal by winning the World Series.
Despite the team's lack of deep postseason success, they have remained competitive, winning five division titles since 2002. They have recently positioned themselves for another postseason run by acquiring high profile free agents Josh Hamilton and Albert Pujols.
