Detroit Tigers Collecting and Fan Guide
Overview
The Detroit Tigers are one of baseball's oldest teams and are known for their blue collar fan base. Through the years, the team has emulated that work ethic. From the hard-nosed play of Ty Cobb, to the fundamental-driven teams led by manager Sparky Anderson, the Detroit Tigers have always prided themselves on hard work and consistency. This strong tradition, combined with a star-filled current team, makes the Detroit Tigers one of the top collecting options in baseball.
When you talk about the history and tradition of the Detroit Tigers, one name immediately comes to mind. Ty Cobb is widely considered one of the best players the game has ever seen and was part of the inaugural Baseball Hall of Fame class in 1936. Ty Cobb's baseball cards and sports memorabilia are at the pinnacle of all sports collectibles.
Despite winning the American League pennant on numerous occasions with Cobb, the team always fell short in the World Series. That changed in 1935 when the Tigers won their first World Series largely thanks to Hank Greenberg, Charlie Gehringer, Goose Goslin and Mickey Cochrane. The team would win another title in 1945 with the timely return of Hank Greenberg from World War II military service. The team's pitching ace, Hal Newhouser, became the game's first pitcher to win back-to-back MVP awards. Newhouser also won the pitching Triple Crown with 25 wins, an ERA of 1.81 and 212 strikeouts.
The Tigers' two additional championships came in 1968 and 1984. The periodic success of the franchise, highlighted with long intervals devoid of World Series titles, has kept the team's fan base ever hopeful of a return to postseason glory.
The Tigers have fielded some remarkable teams through the years, including the '84 team led by manager Sparky Anderson. The roster was laden with talent and exhibited the chemistry needed for teams to win championships. Jack Morris, Kirk Gibson, Lance Parrish, Alan Trammel, and Lou Whitaker are just a handful of the names that provided the Tigers' faithful with a postseason spectacle.
In more recent years, the Tigers have rebuilt themselves into a competitive team, winning A.L. Central Division titles in 2011, 2012 and 2013. They also won the American League Championship Series in both 2006 and 2012. Led by young prospects, veteran pitching and aggressive free agent signings, the team has shown a commitment to winning, making them one of the most watched teams in baseball.
