Detroit Red Wings Collecting and Fan Guide
Overview
As an "Original Six" team, the Detroit Red Wings have a long and storied history of success in the NHL. They have won 11 Stanley Cup championships, which is the most by any American franchise, to date. Founded in 1926, the team played their home games at Olympia Stadium for 40 years before moving into their current confines of Joe Louis Arena.
The franchise had early success, winning the Stanley Cup three times between 1936 and 1943. Those squads were led by team captains, Doug Young and Sid Abel. Ted Lindsay was a star of those teams and legendary coach, Jack Adams, manned the bench.
The team began a glory era shortly after Gordie Howe joined the team in 1946. Many consider Howe to be the greatest hockey player to ever live. Howe not only possessed the ability to score, but was a solid defender and someone who was willing to drop the gloves when necessary. Howe would go on to be a key factor in the Red Wings dominance during the 1950s, an era in which they won four Stanley Cup titles.
The team struggled severely from 1967 to 1982, a period of time in which fans gloomily referred to the club as the "Dead Wings." That all changed in 1983, when the Detroit Red Wings drafted future superstar, Steve Yzerman. The prior year, the team was sold to current owner, Mike Illitch, who had founded Little Caesars Pizza. Illitch made a commitment to winning and soon started to liberally add star talent in the form of Mike Vernon, Adam Oates, Sergei Federov, Nick Lidstrom, Paul Coffey and Vladimir Konstantinov.
However, the arrival of Hall of Fame coach Scotty Bowman marked the point when things really began to turn around for the Detroit Red Wings. The organization added additional talent to the roster with Brendan Shanahan, Larry Murphy and Igor Larionov, to name a few. The perfect storm of young talent, veteran superstars, championship winning coach, and an owner with deep pockets, all culminated in the Red Wings winning the Stanley Cup in 1997. It was the organization's first since 1955. The team would go on to win The Cup the following year as well, securing the Red Wings' success for years to come.
Since that time, the Red Wings have won two additional Stanley Cups. They have also seen the coming and going of established free agents like Brett Hull, Luc Robitaille and Dominik Hasek, among others.
The team has seen the rise of a new generation of hockey stars in Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk. This era coincided with the retirement of some of the team's and league's all-time best players, like Nicklas Lidstrom, longtime-captain, Steve Yzerman, and fan favorite, Chris Chelios.
