The Cleveland Cavaliers may still be without an NBA title, but the team has been in the basketball spotlight for many years thanks to LeBron James. With James back on board, the team looks to be a frontrunner for NBA success going forward and a collecting hotbed.
The team first emerged in 1970 as an NBA expansion team. Just a few years later, the Cavs made it all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals in 1975-76, but that is the furthest they would progress until the King arrived.
Even though they were unable to bring home a championship, Cleveland enjoyed a consistent winning period in the late-80s and early-to-mid-90s. Things unraveled heading into the new millennium and culminated with a particularly terrible season in 2002-03, in which the team went 17-65.
The Cavaliers would turn that forgettable season into the number one overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft, selecting Akron's own LeBron James. From there, Cleveland became one of the most relevant teams in basketball because of their new superstar. Although the team attempted to surround LBJ with talent and help him bring Cleveland their first title, they still came up short. LeBron James left in free agency to join the Miami Heat, causing a huge rift in the fan base that had built around him and the team.
Once again, Cleveland returned to bad basketball, nearly matching their terrible record from 2002-03 and winning the number one overall pick. This time they selected Kyrie Irving, an immensely talented, but injury-prone point guard. Although the team kept adding young talent, they regularly found themselves in the lottery thanks to four consecutive losing seasons.
The 2014 offseason marked a significant turning point for the team as LeBron James returned to his original team, immediately making the Cavs favorites for the NBA title and putting all eyes on Cleveland. The team was not done, later orchestrating a trade for perennial All-Star Kevin Love in exchange for some of their stockpile of young talent, including two number one overall picks, Anthony Bennett and Andrew Wiggins.
While LeBron James already won titles with Miami, he came home to win more in Cleveland. Now in his prime, anything less than several more NBA championships will be viewed as a failure. If the team produces as expected, collecting interest in the team will explode.
