Overview
Warren Moon cards don't fall under traditional standards of the modern hobby. Having started his professional football career with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League, he has cards with both leagues. And while his 1985 Topps card is considered by most as his rookie card, early Warren Moon CFL cards carry much stronger values.
Moon went undrafted immediately following his collegiate career, which was highlighted by earning the Rose Bowl MVP in 1978. Enter the Edmonton Eskimos. The decision to play for the CFL was the right one. Moon went on to win five Grey Cups, winning the game's MVP twice.
In 1984, Moon signed as a free agent with the Houston Oilers. His NFL rookie card came the following year in 1985 Topps Football. Additionally, there is a 1984 7-11 Disc featuring the quarterback. While not a traditional trading card, many player collectors still see it as an important piece.
Warren Moon's first certified autograph cards would came in 1991 Pro Line Portraits and 1991 Score Dream Team Autographs. 1997 Upper Deck Football has his first memorabilia card.
Warren Moon has maintained somewhat of a presence in the spotlight as a local announcer for the Seattle Seahawks. He is frequently part of autograph line-ups at sports collectibles shows in the States and Canada. Items related to his Grey Cup Championships are very popular with Canadian collectors. Footballs are among the most popular items with Moon's NFL fans.
Warren Moon Rookie Cards and CFL Cards
1981 Jogo CFL Warren Moon
The significance of this card is that it's recognized as Moon's first. Measuring 3 1/2" by 5", it over-sized layout is a bit of a turnoff for some. Like almost every Jogo set, especially the early ones, this is an extremely rare card.
1981 Red Rooster Edmonton Eskimos Warren Moon
This card was issued as part of a sheet that was given out at local grocery stores. Edges are perforated. Like the Jogo card, it's tough to find but it's not terribly expensive.
1983 Jogo CFL Warren Moon
Although it's not the first Warren Moon card, it's his most popular. It's also the most valuable Warren Moon CFL card. 1983 marked the first year that Jogo opted for a traditional size and color photos. Still extremely rare, this is a cornerstone piece for any Warren Moon collection.
1983 Jogo CFL Quarterbacks Warren Moon
In 1983, Jogo also issued a nine-card set dedicated to the CFL's quarterbacks. With its pedigree as a special release (versus the main 1983 Jogo set) and drab black and white design, it's not nearly as iconic as Moon's other card.
1985 Topps Warren Moon RC #251
Notorious for their condition-sensitive black borders, Moon's NFL rookie card can be very difficult to find higher than NM-MT. The horizontal layout was not a hit with collectors at the time, but in recent years there has been some renewed appreciation for the set as a whole.
