Overview
Troy Aikman was one of the best quarterbacks of the 1990's and he helped lead the Dallas Cowboys to three Super Bowl titles. Thanks to his success and the ravenous Cowboys' fanbase, Troy Aikman cards and memorabilia are a popular option with collectors.
Troy Aikman spent his first two seasons with the Oklahoma Sooners, but after winning the starting spot in the 1985 season, Aikman broke his ankle. Oklahoma would go on to win the National Championship without him, prompting Aikman to transfer to UCLA, where he had to sit out his first year. From there, he put up two impressive seasons with the Bruins, including two bowl wins, and was viewed as the top quarterback in the 1989 NFL draft.
With the number one overall pick, the Dallas Cowboys selected Troy Aikman, and paired him with their first round pick from 1988, Michael Irvin. Aikman quickly assumed the starting spot, and was later joined by Emmitt Smith, who was selected by the Cowboys in the first round of the 1990 NFL Draft. The HOF trio pushed the Cowboys to the top of the NFL over the next few seasons, and made them one of the best teams of the decade.
When he finally retired in 2000, largely because of his history of concussions, Troy Aikman was a three-time Super Bowl Champion, with one Super Bowl MVP and six Pro Bowl selections. He was named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
Although he only has three rookie cards, Troy Aikman collectors do have some choices to make. However, all were heavily produced and readily available, so prices remain reasonable.
Troy Aikman Rookie Cards
1989 Pro Set Troy Aikman RC #490
There is really no nice way to say it. This is an ugly card. The various and conflicting color combinations do not go well with the college image of Aikman. Also, the lined side border is not a great look and the decision to allot so much space to the "NO. 1 PICK" tag seems questionable, at best. That is why 1989 Pro Set is normally the third choice for Troy Aikman rookie card collectors.
1989 Score Troy Aikman RC #270
1989 Score has aged well and the design was even brought back in 2013 Score. Luckily for collectors, the Cowboys' colors work well with the green that is heavily used. With Aikman, and other big rookies, 1989 Score has become the preferred product for rookie collectors from this year.
1989 Topps Traded Troy Aikman RC #70T
Certainly not the best looking card, but bland is much better than whatever Pro Set was going for in 1989. 1989 Topps Traded updated the main 1989 Topps release that neglected to include Barry Sanders,Troy Aikman or Deion Sanders. All three rookie cards are found in the 132-card set. The design is virtually the same as the base 1989 Topps release, except the cards carry a "T" suffix in addition to a fresh set of numbers.
