Overview

Pavel Datsyuk hockey cards and autographed memorabilia are some of the best-kept secrets in sports collectibles. That's really just a nice way of saying that they are under-valued in today's hobby. While hockey fans certainly identify Datsyuk as being a top NHL talent, that reality hasn't transitioned to prices of his cards and memorabilia outside of Detroit's fan base. At least not yet.

Datsyuk is a gifted skater with a quiet demeanor who leads by example. His stick handling ability and scoring prowess have earned him respect from his teammates coaches and fans. Perhaps one of the reasons that Pavel Datsyuk cards, particularly his mid-range rookie cards, tend to be under-valued is the fact that despite having 34 rookie cards, none of them are autographed, contain memorabilia or are particularly rare. However, there are a few that can command top dollar.

A victim of a transition period in the hobby, Datsyuk's rookie cards come from 2001-02 products. This was a period of time where the latest trends  and innovations in trading cards, like autographs and memorabilia, were being experimented with by manufacturers. Hockey was the last sport to adopt them on a widespread scale for rookie cards. Additionally, there was an overly crowded marketplace with hockey cards being produced by Pacific, Topps and Upper Deck.

Pavel Datsyuk's popularity in Detroit and on the international stage has provided numerous outlets for his autographed memorabilia. The market is not over-burdened by supply and demand is increasing causing a slight increase in prices over the last few years.

A favorite card to submit for grading, high-grade examples can sell for a couple of hundred dollars. There are actually two versions of this card. The first shows a  purple rink board in the background, while the second (pictured) shows an opponent trailing Datsyuk as he skates up ice.

With just 250 numbered copies, this is Datsyuk's most limited rookie card. As a result, it should come as little surprise that it's one of his most popular and valuable rookie cards.
