Homer Bailey may not be one of baseball's best pitchers, but he has emerged as one of the game's folk heroes. With a pair of no-hitters to his name, he joins an elusive group who have done the accomplishment more than once. And while it's unlikely that most Homer Bailey cards will maintain high long-term values, his multiple no-nos should generate some interest, particularly among big-time Reds fans.
Draft by Cincinnati with the seventh overall pick in the 2004 draft, the pitcher made his debut mid-way through the 2007 season when he was just 21-years old. Since then, he has been solid and consistent, but not spectacular. His first no-hitter came in September, 2012 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. That was followed up by another masterful performance against the reigning World Series champion San Francisco Giants in July, 2013.
Although his numbers are improving and he's still got a lot of time left in his career, Homer Bailey cards haven't gained much widespread notoriety among collectors. However, his numbers aren't far off from being among the league's best. Should Bailey continue to get stronger, those numbers combined with his no-hitters could raise his hobby standing.
Homer Bailey rookie cards can be found in a handful of releases that came out in late 2004. Of the eight rookies, five are autographed. Although none carry a huge price tag, 2004 Bowman Chrome, 2004 Fleer Hot Prospects Draft and 2004 SP Prospects are the most popular. While 2004 Bowman Chrome has an on-card autograph, the Hot Prospects and SP Prospects come with the lowest serial numbers. 2004 Bowman Sterling is the only Homer Bailey rookie card to have both an autograph and a jersey swatch.
Homer Bailey has several 2007 cards that are also labelled as rookies. This comes as a result of the MLBPA changing rookie card rules starting with 2006 sets. However, his 2004 cards are part of base sets. These should be viewed as his true rookie cards.
