Curtis Joseph Rookie Cards and Autographed Memorabilia Guide

Curtis Joseph

Date of Birth: 4/29/1967

Rookie Card Year: 1990-91

Investment Rating: 7.0

Overview

As one of the best NHL goalies throughout much of his 20-year NHL career, Curtis Joseph cards and autographed memorabilia are still popular long after his retirement at the end of the 2008-09 season. Joseph played for numerous teams during his career and was a fan favorite wherever he played.

Joseph's rookie cards were issued in eight different 1990-91 hockey card sets. All of them are reasonably priced. He has three pre-rookie cards as well that were issued by ProCards and Kodak between 1989-1990.

His first certified autograph card was released in 1994-95 Be A Player. It is not serial numbered but the known print run is 2,400 copies.

Curtis Joseph's first game-used memorabilia cards were issued by Upper Deck in 1998-99 SPx and Upper Deck Hockey.

With a nickname like "CuJo," you can bet that his autographed memorabilia with that moniker carries a premium. Joseph has participated in public signing events and has been a willing in-person signer. Mini replica helmets signed by the standout goalie carry a premium. Signed goalie sticks are very rare and can sell for large sums of money.

This and its Topps counterpart feature a very well-received design that has stood the test of time. The two cards differ only in the logo and bilingual back.

When 1990-91 O-Pee-Chee Premier Hockey debuted, it was a huge hit. For a while, it was a darling in the hobby. Premier uses a glossier card stock than the regular O-Pee-Chee set. As the hobby leveled out, the abundant supply brought prices down. Even still, this is one of the most coveted Curtis Joseph rookie card.

This is perhaps one of the most over-produced hockey sets in history. While the set has limited value, it features a great design.

The primary difference between the US and Canadian versions is the color of the Score logo. Neither version carries a significant premium over the other.

When 1990-91 Score Hockey first came out, it was popular. Everything, it seemed was. However, Joseph is largely overshadowed in the set as it's the only one to have rookie cards of Eric Lindros and Martin Brodeur. The Canadian version has a red Score logo on the front.

1990-91 Topps Curtis Joseph RC #171

While the design is solid, this card is largely forgotten. It's readily available, even more so than some of his other rookie cards. Unlike the previous season where Topps had a lower print run than O-Pee-Chee, 1990-91 Topps Hockey carries no such premium.

1990-91 Upper Deck Curtis Joseph RC #175

This set had a massive print run. However, it is still one of the sport's most iconic sets of the era. While not worth much, this is one of Joseph's more popular rookies.

1990-91 Upper Deck French Curtis Joseph RC #175

It was once thought that 1990-91 Upper Deck French had a very small print run. As a result, it once carried a significant premium. When allegations of a return to the presses arose, the value of these cards quickly plummeted. The main difference between the French and English versions can be found with the spelling of the positions on the front.
