Andrew Hammond
Date of Birth: 2/11/1988
Rookie Card Year: 2014-15
Investment Rating: 6.0
If Andrew Hammond wasn't on your hobby radar at the start of the 2014-15 NHL season, don't worry. You're not alone. In fact, there's still not a lot to catch up on card wise. Andrew Hammond rookie cards haven't appeared in a lot of sets, making those that are out there a little more interesting.
Hammond's story is a bit of a hockey fairy tale. He was undrafted when Ottawa signed him in 2013. After an injury to Robin Lehner, he got called up from the AHL and was given a chance with the then mediocre Senators. To say that he's been spectacular, even in a limited amount of games, would be an understatement. He went 12 consecutive games allowing two goals or less. More importantly, the Hamburglar has helped get Ottawa back to winning.
Interest in Andrew Hammond cards is starting to pick up, which will continue as long as he plays well. But there are some questions about their long-term viability. While this streak has been fantastic, it's not sustainable. It's still too early to tell if Andrew Hammond is an elite NHL goalie. Many are hoping, especially in Ottawa, that he can be the difference maker the Senators have been missing.
Hammond played in one game in 2013-14. That made him eligible for cards in 2014-15 products. But Upper Deck still used him sparsely in their early 2014-15 hockey card products, even those with decent-sized rookie checklists. Remember, he wasn't supposed to make a big impact. The result is growing demand, but not a ton of options -- yet. By the time the last 2014-15 hockey products release, that will likely change significantly.
In the meantime, here's a look at what you can find in the way of Andrew Hammond cards.
Andrew Hammond Rookie Cards Checklist
We'll continue to add to this list as more Andrew Hammond rookie cards are released.
2014-15 Fleer Showcase Andrew Hammond RC #102 with Anton Forsberg, Troy Grosenick #/399
The most appealing rookies in 2014-15 Fleer Showcase Hockey come with an autograph and a swatch of a player-worn jersey patch. However, those checklists were likely determined before the season started and the Rookie Showcase was held. As a result, Hammond is part of the Hot Prospects Trios subset where he shares some cardboard real estate with Anton Forsberg and Troy Grosenick. Historically, multi-player rookies are less desirable but the limited print run of 399 copies could help.
2014-15 O-Pee-Chee Andrew Hammond RC #529
This is the most plentiful Andrew Hammond rookie cards. Released before the start of the season, it comes from one of Upper Deck's cheaper products. Even though it's a short print, it's not difficult to find. If you're looking for something more valuable, there are a few parallels. The toughest to find are the Red Border versions, which was available only through a wrapper redemption, and the Retro Blank Back. The Rainbow Foil Black parallel that's numbered to 100.
2014-15 SP Game Used Andrew Hammond RC #142 #/30
The 2014-15 SP Game Used Andrew Hammond rookie card doesn't look very fancy. But, limited to just 30 copies (his jersey number), it's exceptionally rare. No matter what cards come out over the course of the season, this will remain one of his most valuable cards simply based on the limited supply.
Notable Andrew Hammond Minor League Cards
2008-09 Vernon Vipers Andrew Hammond
Good luck finding Andrew Hammond's first card. Released during his days in BCHL, it was available locally and likely in very limited supplies. Your best bet might be to search out full Vipers team sets and not just singles.
2014-15 Choice Birmingham Senators Andrew Hammond
Usually, minor league cards have the most appeal when they're released in the years before NHL rookie cards. Hammond's 2014-15 Birmingham Senators card doesn't benefit from that. Still, it's not a very common card for completists to find.
