Odell Beckham Jr. Rookie Card Guide and Visual Checklist
While a hamstring injury delayed the start of Odell Beckham Jr.'s rookie season, he is now fully healthy and quickly making a name for himself on the field and in the hobby. The visual guide below contains a look at all the official rookie cards for Beckham, as well as notable college and pre-rookie cards.
Odell Beckham Jr. first emerged on the football scene as a receiver and punt/kickoff returner for Louisiana State University. After three seasons with the LSU Tigers and the 2013 Paul Hornung Award as the most versatile player in college football, Beckham entered the 2014 NFL Draft. The New York Giants made him the 12th overall pick in the draft and the third wide receiver off the board after Sammy Watkins and Mike Evans.
A lingering hamstring injury forced Beckham to miss the first four games of the regular season, but he acclimated quickly and scored a touchdown in his very first game. A serious injury to the top receiver on the team, Victor Cruz, thrust Odell Beckham Jr. into a featured role and he has excelled. Although he had put up great stats for several weeks, his mainstream breakout came in the Sunday Night Football matchup with the Dallas Cowboys on November 23rd. Beckham scored two touchdowns in the game, including an impressive one-handed grab that immediately became a sensation online.
Odell Beckham Jr. finished the 2014 season as the top rookie receiver, compiling 91 receptions, 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was named the 2014 AP Offensive Rookie of the Year, two-time 2014 Offensive Rookie of the Month and was a 2014 Pro Bowl selection. Although slightly inconsistent, he has shown tremendous production in his sophomore season as well.
From a collecting perspective, Odell Beckham Jr. was certainly not a sleeper given that he was a dynamic college receiver and taken in the early part of the first round. His injury softened values and allowed many collectors to get deals, but now that he is on the field and excelling, that point has passed. Regardless, there are plenty of rookie card options for OBJÂ across all budgets.
While most rookies from the 2014 class had their first cards in late-2013 products or not until 2014, Odell Beckham Jr.'s first cards came in 2011 Leaf U.S. Army All-American Football. The product covered the high school all-star game and featured base cards as well as a variety of inserts and autographed cards. Both sticker and on-card autographs are available for Beckham, but the supply is limited.
The most popular Odell Beckham Jr. cards are his official rookies found in 2014 Panini and Topps products. One downside to the early releases is that there tends to be a lot of images that are recycled. Another common element is base variations, which offer short-printed versions of Beckham's rookie cards. His Rookies and Stars variation is notable because it features Beckham making a one-handed catch.
One thing that has become apparent for OBJ's card options in Topps and Panini is that his autographs are a lot less common than other rookies from the 2014 class. Many early products didn't feature him at all in signed sets or only as limited parallels to base versions. This changed as the collecting season progressed, and more signed cards are now available for Beckham. Top autograph options include Odell Beckham Jr. rookie cards in Contenders, Crown Royale, Immaculate Collection, National Treasures, Inception and Five Star.
Another route for collectors to take is pre-rookie or college themed cards. Upper Deck offers Odell Beckham Jr. cards with an LSU theme along with the history of the respected brand. His signed cards from 2013 Exquisite will be one of the top overall OBJ cards when it is finally made.
On the other hand, Leaf utilizes college images that have been airbrushed to remove logos, but the cards maintain interest based on their quality and limited nature. Also, Leaf autographs are largely on-card and this is another big perk for collectors. Press Pass is another option and can be an ideal way to find budget autographs for Beckham.
