Law of Cards: Bill Mastro Filing Seeks Leniency in Sentencing
The almost three-year-long Bill Mastro criminal saga is nearing its end.
Last week, Mastro’s counsel submitted a Sentencing Memorandum seeking as lenient a sentence as possible for Mastro. Within this 63-page filing, Mastro’s counsel explained in detail why a sentence of probation “with a condition of rigorous community service” should be required, instead of prison time.
Mastro’s counsel also included 223 character letters which “attest to Bill’s uncommon humanity and commitment to helping others.” As the memo states:
Taken together, the letters demonstrate that Bill’s extraordinary, decades-long dedication to service exists at the core of who he is. The letters attest to the quiet way in which Bill serves others—never seeking credit or acclaim—and to his meaningful and selfless good works. We respectfully submit that the character revealed by Bill’s charitable acts, as well as the genuine remorse evidenced.
Obviously, this document was created to help put Mastro in the best light possible, to minimize Mastro's sentence (which could be up to five years). Still, while I read it (OK…I skimmed it), I thought I could hear the repeated chant from Cersei Lannister’s “walk of shame” from Game of Thrones.
Shame. Shame. Shame.
