Law of Cards: Bill Mastro Filing Seeks Leniency in Sentencing

The almost three-year-long Bill Mastro criminal saga is nearing its end.

Last week, Mastro’s counsel submitted a Sentencing Memorandum seeking as lenient a sentence as possible for Mastro. Within this 63-page filing, Mastro’s counsel explained in detail why a sentence of probation “with a condition of rigorous community service” should be required, instead of prison time.

Mastro’s counsel also included 223 character letters which “attest to Bill’s uncommon humanity and commitment to helping others.” As the memo states:

Taken together, the letters demonstrate that Bill’s extraordinary, decades-long dedication to service exists at the core of who he is. The letters attest to the quiet way in which Bill serves others—never seeking credit or acclaim—and to his meaningful and selfless good works. We respectfully submit that the character revealed by Bill’s charitable acts, as well as the genuine remorse evidenced.

Obviously, this document was created to help put Mastro in the best light possible, to minimize Mastro's sentence (which could be up to five years). Still, while I read it (OK…I skimmed it), I thought I could hear the repeated chant from Cersei Lannister’s “walk of shame” from Game of Thrones.

Shame. Shame. Shame.

If you wish to suffer through Mastro's own “walk of shame,” a copy of the memorandum is here.

The 223 character letters are not…

Now, all we're left with is the final step of the process - will it convince the court for a more lenient sentence?

  1. The admission of trimming the Wagner alone deserves prison time but he got immunity on that. The shady business of shill bidding deserves not only prison time but restitution. But the court can’t determine damages on that. So if he doesn’t get prison time, Mastro will get away with the biggest fraud in the history of the hobby.

  2. I like this part..”Bills extraordinary decades long dedication to service exists at the core of who he is” What a bunch of crap. Most of those people probably think of what he did was very minor not having a clue about the industry. I hope people on the other side gave their statements as well. I would think they would but who knows with this justice system. But this guy is the exact type that needs to be made an example of. To many like him in our Country who make life hard for people, and cost us so much money, but while we just want to just enjoy life. Pukes like this should have the crap kicked out of them on Main Street in front of hundreds of people. It would put a stop to these kind more than the current system does that’s for sure.

  3. Is anyone talking about the fact that PSA didn’t slab the card, “altered”?
