National Treasures

National Treasures Sports Cards

The National Treasures brand is an ultra high-end product manufactured by Panini that dates back to 2006. First released in football, the set features low-numbered cards of legends, fan favorites, superstars and rookies complete with autographs and a wide array of premium memorabilia. Referred to as a high-risk, high-reward release, the retail price of the product puts it out of reach for most collectors. Fortunately, individual cards perform well on the secondary market and provide an alternative for collectors unable to afford the high-end offering by the box. Interesting to note, the National Treasures moniker itself was also used in a sport in which the brand has never been released—hockey. 1997-98 Donruss Preferred Hockey used the name for an insert set along with 1997 Donruss Preferred Baseball.

A New Era of Collecting

National Treasures was just one of several products introduced in a three-year period, between 2003 to 2006, that helped solidify the current hobby market with a “hit”-based focus. One such product that had been released by a competitor in basketball, set the stage for the National Treasures NBA debut during the 2009-10 season. The international interest in basketball card collecting made the release an instant hit. Prices for boxes and cases escalated quickly as a result of supply/demand economics. In addition, single-card prices reached new levels for modern cards and cemented the brand as a staple in the hobby calendar.

Baseball Collectors Rejoice

In 2012, baseball collectors, forced to simply drool on the sidelines for years, finally had their opportunity to enjoy the product. Dominated by retired greats and legendary Hall of Famers, the product relied heavily on relics from such players as Ty Cobb, Shoeless Joe Jackson, Napoléon “Nap” Lajoie, and other players of that ilk to market the product. Despite not having an MLB license, meaning player photos could not display uniform logos, the staff at Panini America utilized some creative photography to deliver a solid product offering for baseball card collectors.
