Autographics

Autographics. Just saying the word evokes memories for collectors who were in the hobby during the late-1990s. The concept was so simple, yet so profound. First, start with an design that allows a large signing space. Next, add an extensive checklist of on-card signers. Finally, release the signed cards with the same design in all products for the year. Repeat.

They were not the first pack-pulled autographs, but something about the combination of on-card autographs and a consistent design made the cards so alluring. And because the theme continued throughout all products during the season, it walked that line that normally separates set collectors from hit collectors. Although Autographics persisted throughout the duration of Fleer/Skybox's existence, the first releases under the Skybox name continue to see the most interest from collectors. The line was even spun off into its own product, beginning with 2003-04 Skybox Autographics.

From the early days of Autographics in basketball, a movement was born. The line eventually spread throughout the collecting sports world, including football, baseball, hockey and women's basketball. In 2005, Upper Deck purchased the Fleer Skybox name and due to their continued popularity, brought back Autographics inserts under various Fleer brands and retro-themed products.

The bankruptcy and ultimate sale of Fleer/Skybox have made things a little messy for collectors and there is still some degree of uncertainty in regards to what cards are out there compared to which cards were actually pulled from packs.

The guide covers all the basketball Autographics from the inaugural edition in 1996-97 until 2000-01. After that, the line was shelved until 2003-04 when it was reborn as a standalone brand. Autographics reemerged later after Upper Deck purchased the naming rights for Fleer/Skybox. View specific information and full checklists for each edition using the tabs above.

The following gallery showcase the evolution of Autographics with images of each edition.

The very first release of Autographics might be the most popular. The 95-card checklist includes an impressive assortment of players, including signed cards for notable stars like Kevin Garnett, Scottie Pippen, Grant Hill, Hakeem Olajuwon and rookie autographs for Steve Nash and Ray Allen.

The checklist was featured in a variety of products over the 1996-97 seasons, including Hoops, Skybox E-x2000, Skybox Premium, and Skybox Z-Force. The cards were available at the same odds in each product, falling 1:72 packs. However, specific cards were only available in certain products.

The cards were not numbered, so they are shown below in alphabetical order. Most players also have a "Blue Ink" parallel, where it was reported that the first 100 cards were signed with blue ink instead of black. However, a few players differ from this. Reportedly, Scottie Pippen and Hakeem Olajuwon only signed in blue ink, but Pippen cards have been seen in black ink. Also, Kevin Garnett is believed to have signed roughly two-thirds in blue ink and the rest in black.

Fakes are rampant for the bigger names in this product. While a key element to look for is the Skybox embossed logo, that is not necessarily a guarantee of authenticity. In addition to outright counterfeits, many unsigned cards, already stamped, are believed to have been back-doored when Skybox/Fleer went bankrupt. Because of this, when dealing with any of the bigger names, it is strongly recommended that collectors buy cards that have been professionally authenticated by a reputable grading service.

Round two saw a more extravagant design and a larger checklist. The 117-card set includes names like Charles Barkley, Clyde Drexler, Grant Hill, Reggie Miller, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman. Again, the cards were not numbered and are listed below in alphabetical order. A popular parallel emerged in 1997-98 Autographics. Century parallels are hand numbered to 100 and include silver sparkle foil text.

Jerry Stackhouse actually has two different cards. One shows him as a Detroit Piston and the other shows him with the Philadelphia 76ers. Also, Tracy McGrady and Rasheed Wallace apparently only signed Century Marks parallels and have no base Autographics.

The pack odds were not consistent in 1997-98 and differed by release. Specific odds are noted below, when available.

One of the largest checklists in the history of Autographics, 139 cards were available, including stars like Vince Carter, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, Grant Hill, Allen Iverson, Karl Malone, Hakeem Olajuwon, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman. The cards were not numbered and are listed in alphabetical order below.

Rookie players were originally inserted as redemptions, but signed cards were also included in products later in the year. Although the Blue Ink parallel is hand numbered to 50 for most players, it has been reported that Allen Iverson signed around half of his cards in blue and the other half in black. Neither edition is numbered.

Not as deep as the previous year's checklist, 1999-00 included 114 cards and was headlined by Ray Allen, Charles Barkley, Vince Carter, Alonzo Mourning, Shaquille O'Neal, Hakeem Olajuwon and Scottie Pippen. The cards were not numbered and are listed in order by first name.

Parallels returned with Purple Foil versions and were hand numbered to 50. Also, some of the Purple Foil Autographics, including Antoine Walker, were later included in 2001-02 Fleer Platinum rack packs and numbered to 20.

2000-01

2000-01 Fleer Autographics

Click on the listing or images to shop for cards on eBay.

2000-01 marked the point where things started to get a little crazy. First, the brand switched from Skybox to Fleer Autographics. Also, perhaps due to the smaller checklist of 76 cards, parallels were expanded to include both Silver (#/250) and Gold (#/50) versions. The parallels were no longer hand numbered like previous years.

Also, in addition to the regular release, 2000-01 Fleer Authority yielded SSD (Signed, Sealed & Delivered) Autographics cards that were stamped with an embossed SSD logo and slabbed and graded by BGS. They also had Silver and Gold Parallels. The SSD cards cover a portion of the checklist, but are not a complete parallel. Many of these SSD cards have since been removed from their slabs because of lower grades. Only SSD cards have an embossed logo.

A separate insert found in 2000-01 Fleer Futures, Autographics On Location, carries the Autographics name, but resembles a postcard.

Both checklists can be seen below and are listed in alphabetical order since they were not numbered. Odds for each product are shown when available.

Trey is a lifelong sports fanatic. He is a huge fan of the NBA and NFL, as well as soccer, college basketball and college football. As a kid, he collected football and basketball cards. In more recent years, he started collecting basketball cards again on a whim and has since expanded to other sports and entertainment options.
