2021 Topps Update Baseball Variations Gallery and Checklist Guide
Closing out the MLB's flagship card series, the 2021 Topps Update Baseball variations also act as the third batch of short-printed base cards.
As usual, these cards replace the common base image with a limited version. The players are normally more celebratory compared to the main photo.
2021 Topps Update Baseball Variation Odds / Set Details
Pulling from the 2021 Update Series MLB checklist, the 2021 Topps Update Baseball variations lineup offers many top names and this includes rookies.
As the Retail formats showed up ahead of Hobby/Jumbo, these offered the earliest look at the variations. In Retail, the Base Short Print (SP) cards fall 1:55 packs and the Base Super Short Prints (SSP) average 1:1,100 packs. For Jumbo, the SP cards average 1:20 packs and the SSP cards fall 1:383 packs.
There is also a third variation type featuring "big head" images. These are the rarest short prints and are known as Ultra Short Print (USP) or Super SSP (SSSP) cards. The most elusive short prints are not listed with the pack odds.
2021 Topps Update Baseball Variation Codes
The image itself is usually enough to indicate the variation, but given the large number of cards to search, most collectors appreciate a backup option. Listed on the back of the card in small text, the CMP code is an easy way to confirm a variation.
You can find this code below the stats at the end of the CODE#CMP string of numbers.
- Base cards end #395
- SP Variations end #416
- SSP Variations end #417
- SSSP Variations end #418
- Advanced Stat Parallels end #419 (#/300)
The Advanced Stat editions are viewed as a base parallel rather than a variation. In addition to sabermetric stats on the back, these cards are numbered to 300 copies.

Bought a hobby box of 2021 updates direct from Topps. I agree this is one of, if not the, worst designs they have EVER had, BUT the reason for my comment is that i got 2 #285’s – one of David Hale of the Phillies and one of Vladimir Gutierrez of the Reds. This does NOT show up in the Variations list.
Trey Treutel
Correct. Those aren’t considered variations. By mistake, there are 2 different #285 base cards and no card #142.
