Product Details

User Rating:

Continuing the high-end MLB brand for another year, 2018 Topps Diamond Icons Baseball maintains the four-figure box cost and ten hits per box.

The expensive set first released in 2017, and it again sticks to on-card autographs and low-numbered cards. In fact, every card is limited to 25 copies or less.

2018 Topps Diamond Icons Baseball Autographs

Hard-signed cards occupy most of the 2018 Topps Diamond Icons Baseball checklist, with seven autographed cards per box. This includes the base Autograph, Diamond Autograph and Red Ink Autograph sets. Each option is numbered to 25 or less and features Purple (#/10), Red (#/5) and Gold (1/1) parallels, as well.

2018 Topps Diamond Icons Baseball

Falling in every other box, the Cut Signatures lineup is numbered to four copies apiece with a one-of-one Gold parallel. There are also Immortal Cut Signature cards.

2018 Topps Diamond Icons Baseball Autograph Relics

Occupying the other two signed cards in each box, the autograph relics boast an on-card signature and memorabilia swatch. Coming in at 25 copies or less, 2018 Topps Diamond Icons Baseball includes Autographed Authenticated Jumbo Patches. These have Purple (#/10), Red (#/5) and Gold (1/1) parallels.

2018 Topps Diamond Icons Baseball

Limited to 10 copies or less, collectors can pull Single-Player Autograph Relic, Single-Player Dual Autograph Relic, Single-Player Dual Team Autograph Relic, and Dual-Player Dual Autograph Relic cards. Each card also has Red (#/5) and Gold (1/1) editions.

2018 Topps Diamond Icons Baseball

2018 Topps Diamond Icons Baseball Relics

Finally, at one per box, are the unsigned relics. However, these don't skimp on the quality one would expect from 2018 Topps Diamond Icons Baseball. In addition to the Single-Player Relics (#/10) and Dual-Player Dual Relic Books (#/10), the Diamond Relic cards put four diamonds into the design for 12 top players. Each of these sets adds Red (#/5) and Gold (1/1) parallels.

Working with more unique items are the Preeminent Pieces (#/10 or less) and MLB Silhouetted Batter Logo Patch (1/1) cards. Preeminent Pieces also has a one-of-one Spikes parallel.

  1. The insanity continues. Last year I watched a rich guy open four boxes of this trash, costing over $5,500. In all four, the total perceived/realized value of all the cards in each box did not come close to a fifth the cost of the boxes. How can anyone fall for this? The ROI is near zero, forever, unless your entire box is 1/1 cards. Last year’s prices bear this out. Nothing here, folks. Move on.

  2. What Chris said back in July..AVOID

  3. Too high priced. I’d rather spend it on a Mantle card or other true vintage cards that will keep or increase the value.

I’ve been a card collector for over 50 years. My goal has been the same for the majority of those years. The quest to complete a set.

I don’t see any value in purchasing this issue from Topps.

  4. Great high end product

  5. $1500 and there are redemptions!!!!!

  6. This is ridiculous. Good luck to the suckers who spend money on these. Of course, none of them are probably readers of Cardboard Connection.

  7. Hideous product. First break I watched was a $150 per hit random hit break. Not even joking literally every card in the break wouldn’t sell for even $50. It was a joke.

  8. “Cut Signatures” – lot’s of dead folks. I am not understanding. Signatures?

  9. Watched some case breaks online and woW,for $5,000 plus simply not much there. One case there was one card per pack that you would actually want. How excited would you be to drop $1,500 for a pack and it contains Dennis Eckersley and Ozzie Smith. You can get their autos a lost CHEAPER and as a poster said, redemptions, redemptions. Buy at your own Risk

  10. Topps listed it on their site and went out of stock. I screen captured the ad that showed Ohtani, Judge, McGwire, Kershaw and if these aren’t special packs credit card disputes will be ripe. No disclaimers or the lists provided here but a possible misleading ad if this is a Topps dump and not an offering as depicted. Jury is out for now.

  11. I don’t follow what you are saying. The full checklist is listed here. The cards you are referring to are the mock-up images used in the solicitation for the product. All of these are included in the final checklist.

  12. This price point is beyond ridiculous. Even given the low numbered hits, it’s doubtful that most hits will sell at a level to cover cost.

  13. This product must be aimed at folk who burn hundred dollar bills in the VIP lounge of a club just for fun.

Possibly the worst value for money in all of baseball collecting.

Better to buy a handful of Mike Trout Rookie Cards in the Topps 2011 Update Series.

  14. Ford Frick Cut Signature…

Most underwhelming pull of the year?

  15. Can anyone tell me why he has two different autos versions?
DA-SO Shohei Ohtani – Los Angeles Angels
    DA-SOH
    Thank you

  16. Topps does this pretty often for rookies. It just lets them double up the autographs for a given player.
