2017 Topps Opening Day Baseball Inserts

That's not to say that 2017 Topps Opening Day Baseball doesn't offer collecting variety. With an overall average of one per pack, quite a few new inserts enter the fold as well as some familiar choices. Superstar Celebrations displays the fun side of the game after a big play while Mascots focuses on the goofy creatures scurrying around the stadium. Bringing stickers into the equation, Opening Day Stars features the biggest names in baseball.

Collectors are treated to several new inserts in 2017 Topps Opening Day Baseball. Going into the stands, Incredible Eats highlights the culinary delights at the various venues. Drawing attention to the solemn respect shown by players, National Anthem captures the pre-game salute to the United States.

Similarly, Stadium Signatures covers the excitement outside the game with shots of fans getting autographs from their favorite players. Lastly, the Opening Day team inserts are named for their images that are actually from the first games of the year.

2017 Topps Opening Day Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Trey Treutel

Good: New chase inserts, low price, foil base parallels really pop.

Bad: Very tough odds on several of the sets, most boxes feel a bit one-note.

The Bottom Line: While Opening Day is a low-end set traditionally aimed at entry-level collectors or those not looking for frills, the new SSP inserts change that somewhat. Although the chase cards spice up the simple release, it also makes it much harder to build the insert sets, and these short print cards rely almost entirely on the photos.

Staff Rating:
3.7 / 5.0

Card Design: 3.5/5.0

Using the flagship design and many of the same images as Series 1, the base set is not the place to look if you want something new or fresh. That makes it tougher for me get too excited about Opening Day off the bat. Having said that, the Blue foil parallels really stand out and brighten up a release that can start to feel repetitive.

Although design variety comes via the inserts, you’re only likely to uncover five of the options in your box. While none of the designs really jumped out at me, I did appreciate the images found in the Superstar Celebrations and Opening Day inserts. Opening Day Stars has potential but I would have liked to have seen some foil or a more pronounced finish.

Moving to the tougher pulls, none are especially remarkable other than the images, just decidedly more rare. I was not a fan of the decision to make the Stadium Signatures front design just like the base cards. This confused many collectors.

Checklist: 4.0/5.0

The 2017 Topps Opening Day Baseball checklist is interesting. While very limited, the autographs and relics feature big names. Plus, non-traditional aspects like mascots or ballpark food extends the reach of the set beyond just standard MLB collectors.

The problem is that of the 15 insert lines, only about a third can be reasonably expected in a box. This is fine in most sets where the majority are autographs or relics. However, it does seem a little odd to push a budget product in this direction.

Value: 3.75/5.0

The average box of 2017 Topps Opening Day Baseball has limited monetary value. Since prices are hovering around $25-30 for a box at the time of this review, this should not be all that surprising. There is collecting value, and that is helped by a full base set coming in most boxes as well as the intriguing mix of player images and mascots/food.

Considering the low cost for a box, if you do hit one of the rare cards, that can push the value much higher. This possibility is another boost for value.

The Fun Factor: 3.5/5.0

The changes in 2017 Topps Opening Day Baseball are something that puts me in a weird place as far as enjoyment. On the one hand, I like that they tried to mix things up and give OD another collecting level. Despite this, with so few truly basic sets out there, I would like it much more if they give it a unique design and made an effort to come up with some cool-looking inserts instead of just loading it with flagship cards and increased rarity.

Great set. However, there is a comical error on the Superstar Celebrations Russell Martin card. The back states May 28, 1016 instead of 2016. Who knew they were playing baseball 1000 years ago??

Could not make base set out of box. Bought another box & 3 cards in every pack were off centered top to bottom. 1/4 inch of another card on bottom. I know, what do you expect for a cheap set.

I got a trout sticker card. How rare is that? Are Stadium cards rare?

I realize no one is still posting on this topic anymore, but I had to tell someone. I just bought my first two boxes of OD (1 yesterday, 1 today); considering the odds on variations and insert/variations, I’ve been pleasantly surprised. Yesterday’s box had the Harper Signature Signings ssp. Today I pulled the Trout ssp (holding a puppy). The prices are down quite a bit on these, but they’re still pretty good hits. I checked the shop where I bought them, and they confirmed the boxes were out of the same case. That’s two ssp cards in one case: this is much better than the garbage I got from a case of Archives last year–the case hit there had to be the four (4!!!) Aaron Nola autos I pulled from that case. I’ve never been much of an OD fan, but I think that just changed.

Well, I picked up my two hobby boxes of 2017 Topps Opening Day and some of the inserts sets will be very hard to find i suggest looking at Card shows I have one on Wed’s. The card design isn’t nothing to yell about but are still nice looking. Rookies yep this is a plus for me I still collect my Rookie cards sleeve them and stash them away and now that i have Arron Judge Rookie card the only player who i think can go passed A-Rod’s numbers I may not make it I’m 66 now but I am sure he’ll be a monster of a player. Anyway, I hear Topps is changing I was told 2017 Bunt will not guarantee insert cards and stating on Average to bad topps I would have bought Bunt but you pushed me from ever touching those cards again. Overall, I needed something to build and opening day was it this week.

I’m a bit disappointed with this set for a few reasons:
1: There are so many cards of not as great players. Why can’t Topps put some better players in Series One?
2: I haven’t seen any store specific parallels since 2014. Whatever happened to those?
3. There are practically no ‘SP’ variations, it’s all ‘SSP’
4. Topps is making way too many insert sets. It’s so hard to make a master set.
Thanks for reading!

There’s a base variation of card #190 Noah Syndergaard. To save money I go cheap and just buy base sets. These variations are killing me. To have to pay $50-$100 of more for a variation.

Are the blue foil parallels the cards numbered up to 2017?

Trey Treutel

They are not serial numbered.

Lets see if there are 170 Sig series Auto cards (17 x 10) and they come one every 17280 packs then there should be approximately 2937600 packs, and 20563200 base cards and about 102816 base sets. By comparison in the late 1980s there were about 1 million Topps.(792 cards) sets made. Of course Topps only put out 1 set back then.

I think the National Anthem and the Stadium Signatures sets are some of the coolest Topps has ever made. Do you think that the prices will come down enough for normal people to be abke to afford them?

Bennie
Bennie

Ok, so I saw a Yankees team set and Derek Jeter has a card. Is this normal or are aliens attacking all the topps people?

Hi, can you guys add the indication of odds in the checklist?
A lot of tough insert pulls in this one, and it would be much appreciated if we could see the odds in one view on this page.
Thanks!

I will see if I can track down the official pack odds.

Hey, Do you if and when Topps is putting out Team Set Blister packs this year?

I just bought a complete base set of this series for $18. Is that a good deal or am I losing money?

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

Seems about right for release day but prices will likely soften as more cards enter the market. Base sets have been going for around $17 to $20. Here’s the current set listings: http://www.ebay.com/sch/Baseball-Cards/213/i.html?_sop=15&_from=R40&_nkw=2017+opening+day+200+set+-pick

My page just updated, that’s why I didn’t see your last comment. How much do you think a master set would cost?

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

Very, very expensive to get a master set. They were pre-selling for around $200 before everyone knew how rare some of the sets were.

Bob

Why are the national anthem inserts so expensive? Are they that rare?
Also the stadium signatures. Why are they all triple digits in price?

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

Many of the inserts are very rare in Opening Day. National Anthem is almost as tough as the variations and Stadium Signatures is even harder to pull.

Sometimes I go by Jimmy, but it’s usually Nick.
What about every image of every insert card listed in the checklist?
Y’know, cuz I really wanna see all of the pictures but I don’t want to spend $120 for a master set.

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

We try to add one image for each insert. If you are looking to see them all, we directly link to listings on eBay under each section.

Jimmy
Jimmy

Could you maybe put the image of all the inserts because they are really hard to find and I don’t have enough time to go look them all up. Thanks! (Hopefully)

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

That’s the plan. We add whatever useable images we can find for the sets.

Thank you Trey I did not realize that is what they meant.

Lastly, the Opening Day inserts are named for their images that are actually from the first games of the year.

How is this possible when this is do to be released on 3/17/2017 and the season starts on 4/2/2017??

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

There is no possible way to include actual 2017 Opening Day images in a set that comes out during the prior month. These are images from previous Opening Day games.
