In the same mindset of the prospect-heavy Bowman Inception line, 2017 Topps Inception Baseball showcases the abstract, colorful background synonymous with the brand, but this time for the MLB's budding stars.
Featuring just one pack, every hobby box contains an autograph or autograph relic.
2017 Topps Inception Baseball Base
Taking an interest in the league's youngest talent, and some of its biggest stars, the 2017 Topps Inception Baseball checklist totals 100 base cards. The unique base design is further enhanced with multiple tiers of numbered parallels. Averaging two per box, parallels include Green (#'d), Purple (#/150), Magenta (#/99), Red (#/75), Orange (#/50), Blue (#/25), Inception (1/1), and Printing Plate (1/1) versions.
2017 Topps Inception Baseball Autographs
Lumped into one youth-based group, the Base Rookie and Emerging Stars Autographs cards work with a similar design to the base set but add on-card signatures. Magenta (#/99), Red (#/75), Orange (#/50), Blue (#/25), Inception (1/1) parallels increase the amount of cards per player.
Averaging one per case, the contrasting look of Inception Silver Signings (#'d) pairs a dark background with silver ink. Gold Ink and Inscriptions are each one-of-one parallels. Although most of the signed sets work only with the younger stars, Inceptions Legendary Debut Autographs (#'d) brings seasoned names of note into the fold with early images and hard-signed cards. More rarity comes with the Orange (#/10), Blue (#/5) and Inception (1/1) parallels.
Naturally, it wouldn't be Inception without a strong dose of auto patch cards and 2017 Topps Inception Baseball has plenty! Inception Autograph Relics and Autograph Jumbo Patch cards are both numbered with limited parallels, as well. Lastly, Inception patch booklets take the form of Autograph Team Logo Patch (#/2), Autograph Letter Patch (#/2), Autograph Laundry Tag (#/2) and MLB Silhouetted Batter Logo (1/1) inserts.

2017 Topps Inception Baseball Product Review

Good: Cards look very nice, mainly on-card signatures, all autographs are serial numbered, big hits in play.
Bad: True gamble format, uneven team representation, fair amount of redemptions.
The Bottom Line: There is a lot to like about the debut Topps Inception release, but the one-pack (with one hit) format is very risky by the box. Sure, the chance at some amazing hits is enticing, but the dud possibility is more likely. This is one that is much better suited to those that purchase by the case or get into group breaks.
Card Design: 4.25/5.0
Inception has always caught my attention in a good way with the vivid colors and swirls, and the white-based scheme looks great, especially with an on-card signature. While most of the hits follow suit, including the vertical booklets, the Silver Signings and horizontal booklets add their own quality element with a darker design. In particular, the silver and gold ink really pops on the Silver Signings cards.
I also enjoyed the Legendary Debut signature cards with player images from early in their careers. This is a nice addition for these rare cards.
Obviously, the sticker signatures on the autograph relics are a negative, but this is just a minor issue for me when discussing the overall design.
Checklist: 3.75/5.0
When you build a product around the more popular teams, the depth of the checklist normally suffers. This is what we see in 2017 Topps Inception Baseball. While the big teams get coverage, several franchises are not well represented, much to the disappointment of some team collectors.
At least collectors can get a pretty clear picture on the rarity since every autograph is numbered.
Another thing to note is that although there are several top subjects available, redemptions are a bit more common.
Value: 3.25/5.0
With just one pack (and one autograph), the $65-70 box (at the time of the review) is a very risky proposition. At this price, most are better off going with singles or group breaks while obviously being aware of which teams are not in great supply.
Also, while many sets are helped by retired and Hall of Fame player autographs, 2017 Topps Inception Baseball only has current players. This is not necessarily a bad thing but these guys normally carry more value than the huge influx of rookie signatures, many of which go for only a few dollars.
That’s not to say there isn’t any value in 2017 Topps Inception Baseball, as there is plenty. It just speaks to the format more than anything.
The Fun Factor: 3.75/5.0
I would describe 2017 Topps Inception Baseball as an amazing snack when I am hungry for a meal. The cards are impressive with a thick stock and quality deigns. But at around $70 a box, it is hard to come out feeling satisfied unless you pull something rare. Make no mistake, it's a fun product, but I would have liked a bit more from the box.
