2017 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball Cards

2017 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball Cards

Product Details

User Rating:

Tweaking things a fair amount from the previous year, 2017 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball drops the price point while continuing the legacy of the throwback-style release. Every hobby box includes two autographs and an oversized topper.

Although the set does indeed see a price reduction, the biggest change for collectors is the removal of several common features for the brand. 2017 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball does not contain the mini parallels (and variations) and framed parallels. It also operates with a smaller primary set and drops the two guaranteed relics of previous years.

2017 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball Base, Variations

Totaling 300 cards, the base set covers today's stars and key rookies. 20 additional Base Short Print cards offer legends of the game. Parallels add more collecting elements with Purple (#'d), hobby-only Black & White (#/50), Red (#/10) and Black (1/1). The sell sheet also promises "surprise parallels and hidden gems."

A collecting staple, Variations return in 2017 with a variety of choices. Among these are Capless Image Variation cards that, just as they sound, show players without their hats.

2017 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball Autographs

Combining to fall two per box, 2017 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball signatures are led by the main Gypsy Queen Autographs set that utilizes the base design and hard-signed content. Parallels include Purple (#'d), Black & White (#/50) and Black (1/1) versions. Providing more excitement are the unannounced autograph variations teased in the solicitation.

Chewing Gum Mini Autograph inserts take their inspiration from tobacco cards with a numbered base and Black parallel (1/1). Other premium signed sets include Autograph Garments (#'d), which features a relic and on-card signature. One-of-one Black parallels substitute a game-used jersey button. Lace Around the League (#'d) also showcases hard-signed autographs alongside a relic. This time, game-used baseballs are displayed. The tri-fold Autograph Patch Book cards contain two player images with an on-card signature and multi-color patch.

2017 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball Inserts, Relics, Toppers

More content comes as inserts like the new Fortune Teller Mini that tries to predict events for 2017 with a limited Black parallel (1/1). In addition, Portrait Art Reproductions puts an artistic spin on notable players. Only found in hobby boxes, Portrait Art Patch Originals (1/1) adds a quality relic piece to hand-drawn artwork.

Providing another element in every 2017 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball box, the oversized GQ GlassWorks Chrome toppers are a box hit exclusive to hobby. Added rarity comes with Purple (#'d), Red (#/25), Black (1/1) and low-numbered Autograph parallels.

2017 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball Retail

2017 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball also offers a few retail-only components. This includes a Base Green parallel only found in Retail Value Packs. In addition, there is a Fortune Teller Minis Green parallel that is found in retail formats.

2017 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Trey Treutel

Good: Updated main design looks good, on-card autographs, striking GlassWorks box toppers.

Bad: Parallels and variations go a little overboard, hits per box drop from 2016, removal of the minis.

The Bottom Line: GQ is not the biggest set among the retro-style releases, but it has carved out a niche. Collectors are likely aware that Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball saw a fair amount of tweaks this time around. While several things were removed, the much leaner product still brings something to the table despite a tougher ROI.

Staff Rating:
3.8 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.5/5.0

In my collecting experience, I have always preferred original designs to recycled looks or Heritage-style editions. In this regard, GQ has more appeal. While 2016 was not at all my preference, I really like the change in 2017. For me, it’s the right mix of retro, ornate, artistic and loud.

The parallels here are another story. I do appreciate the unannounced surprises but the Missing Blackplate and Missing Nameplate parallels were overdone, in my opinion. It seems to be something that should have stopped with the base cards instead of making its way through much of the signed cards and even into the variations.

I also feel that the base autograph design is maybe a little too constricting for the signing area. On-card autographs work best with ample space and the more elaborate framing seems to cut into that a tad for the larger signers. This is a minor quibble, for certain, and I enjoy the end result and, of course, the hard-signed aspect.

Another big plus for me was the box toppers. The oversized GlassWorks inserts display Chrome technology on a design that compliments the base without duplicating it outright.

Checklist: 3.5/5.0

When talking about the 2017 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball checklist, it’s not so much what’s there as it is what has gone away. GQ no longer has base mini parallels, framed parallels or unsigned relics. While the removal of minis and framed cards does not personally offend me, they were expected features of the brand. Now there are only two main inserts: Reproduction Hand-Drawn Art and Fortune Teller Minis. Beyond that, collectors are left with mostly just base cards, signed inserts and the variations.

Speaking of the variations, this is another area where things have gotten a little out of control. Variations can’t be a free-for-all. They work best when there is a clear focus, actual rarity and, hopefully, good resulting value.

I understand that the Throwbacks do well in Heritage, but moving that idea here as well is just saturation. Each product with variations—ideally just a few—should be unique to that product. Capless and the Gum Card Backs, which easily could have just been a parallel, are enough. Plus, you throw in the Green, Missing Nameplate and Missing Blackplate parallels, and you further muddy the waters.

On the positive side, just 20 base short prints is less intimidating, but at one per box, set collectors still have plenty of work ahead of them to track down the retired players.

While short prints still apply among the signers, the main autograph checklist has good coverage with many top young players to go along with big names like Jeter, Bonds, Ripken and Chipper Jones.

Value: 3.0/5.0

Gypsy Queen has always struggled with value and part of this is due to it just not being as popular as other Topps Baseball sets. At the time of this review, hobby boxes sit around $100-110. Topps removed a lot of the little things that can add value and replaced it with a few unannounced parallels. That puts nearly all of the value expectation on the two autographs, one short print and any parallels/variations of note.

Even with the lower box price, it is hard to absorb that in monetary value. In this instance, my weaker autograph pulls were helped with the Kris Bryant Throwback but even those values are not very strong compared to other set’s variations.

The Fun Factor: 4.0/5.0

All things considered, I found 2017 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball fairly enjoyable. While I would have liked to have seen a few more inserts, the great design and box topper combined with two hard-signed autographs makes for a fun break. Now Topps just needs to go another step to help separate this set from the other throwback products with a few unique elements.

User Reviews

  1. I didn’t read anything about minis? Are they doing away with them?

  2. John I wondered the same thing. The only mini cards mentioned in the sell sheet were the Chewing Gum Mini Autographs and the Fortune Teller Mini inserts.

  3. Welcome a lower price point. A nice design – though product works better without action shots

  4. I see no point in buying this product, even at a lower price point, without the minis. That was the main reason I collected this product and will not be collecting this year.

  5. GQ is one of my favorite products. One of my top 15 cards is a Gypsy Queen Canseco 1/1.

  6. GQ is my favorite release most years. The revamped ’17 product looks solid and I’m happy for the changes. The minis will be missed a bit but the cheap guaranteed relics won’t be missed. The hits look ridiculous and I’m looking forward to opening a case.

  7. A welcome revamp equals what may be set of the year. A realistic chance at completing a SP set with a case and some good old online trading. Lower price point with 2 autographs which Heritage can’t deliver. I don’t usually buy cases but I did as this product looks great and offers some truly remarkable looking cards. Good call with the revamp and an underated (as of now) product.

  8. The autograph checklists look very strong. With 20 guaranteed in a case, should be fun! They can’t all be Henry Owens.

  9. Why isn’t Edwin Diaz a RC? Doesnt have an RC in any other product.

  10. He has rookie cards in 2016 Topps Update and Heritage High Number.

  11. I would rather have ray Lankford instead henry owens

  12. Chris, let me know how you do on your case!

  13. I’m trying a case this year too, hope it’s good!

  14. it has Derek Jeter Autos…ill give it a shot

  15. Tyler, best of luck on your case. Maybe the three of us can help each other out finishing insert sets, ect.

  16. I’m excited about this product, have always been a fan of GQ. I’m also doing a case. If anyone wants to trade to complete a set, PC, etc let me know!

  17. Sure David, I’ll be opening my case Wed, Should know by Thurs/Fri what I have leftover.

  18. im cracking my case in the morning & will let you know how I made out

  19. I like this product. With so much coming out every year, basic Topps, Heritage and Gypsy Queen are the only Topps baseball sets I try to complete (along with Donruss).

Heritage and Gypsy Queen do have a LOT of SP’s making it expensive. I kind of like the fact that there are only 20 SP’s this year instead of 50 from last year, and that boxes cost half as much. I don’t like that there are only 2 autos per box instead of 2 autos and 2 relics. I had good luck last year though, i pulled a Kris Bryant auto relic in a $20 Target blaster box.

That being said, I bought 4 blaster boxes at Target yesterday and did pull one auto. Probably completed about half the set, as I got several doubles. I will probably buy one hobby box, and then complete whatever i need buy buying them singly.

I was neutral on the minis. They fell out of pack easily and sometimes that dinged the corners.

  20. I opened a case. It’s a fun break. I may or may not be biased because I pulled a Trout throwback and a Trout chewing gum back missing backplate. Lol. Check your cards closely, folks. I missed the chewing gum back the first time through.

  21. Have opened 6 of my 10 case (card shoppe has me in hock…lol) and a Bregman Chewing Gum Auto, Bryant Glassworks Refractor/25, Swanson Capless Variant RC, Piazza Missing name plate variant, David Dahl Auto RC /150, Boegarts Throwback Variant, Swanson Missing Black Plate RC, J.D Martinez Relic Auto /50 were some of the better hits. Can’t wait to see what the other 4 boxes bring!

  22. I’m still deciding about this year’s release, but I did get a couple of good hits. I can’t out much about print run on one, though: pulled a Chewing Gum mini auto (Bregman) that is also a missing black plate parallel. Any idea on the run # for these parallels? The other good hit was a Kris Bryant ssp: missing black plate & chewing gum back–very sweet. These two came out of the same box. Anyway, any info on the Bregman auto would be greatly appreciated.

  23. I pulled a Jeter auto. Very happy :)

  24. Trey got a question here on something odd. My first pack I opened I pulled a Mike Napoli #129. However it is a different color then the rest of the set a purplish/pink and is missing his position above his name down on the lower right. Did I pull a rare error card?? Any info you could provide world be great thanks!!

  25. Hey Matt, it’s the Missing Blackplate parallel. We touch on it more in the variation guide.

  26. The missing blackplate and missing nameplate parallels are nice little additions that bring more value to the set

  27. There are also missing nameplate throwbacks, not shown on the variation info here. They are very, very tough.

  28. Hi Trey, do you have any info on why the front of the Taijuan Walker card (Base #13) says “Arizona” while all other players on the team says “D-Backs”? Maybe it’s an UER like Series 1’s Duda/Campbell? Thank you!

  29. The design is incredibly impressive to me. It is wild, loud, intricate and busy (in a good way.) For the sideways auto/garments – the signature is diagonal, the button hole is unorthodox and there is just so much going on with it, that it makes me happy to look at.

The thing that is tripping me out about it is that it doesn’t look like Gypsy Queen. It looks like Allen & Ginter and Gypsy Queen got married and made a beautiful steampunk / victorian style baby together.

  30. This is a great set. Is there any word on a print run for the throwback missing nameplate cards? So far only 7 total have surfaced on eBay with no duplicates for any player.

  31. A month into the release and so far zero duplicate throwback missing nameplate cards have surfaced. Eight single examples have surfaced, one each for eight of the fifteen players. I can account for the few that have sold and been subsequently relisted as a few of those are now mine and the others a collector that I’m in contact with.
What is the best way to get Topps to give a print run for these? I suspect that they are hidden gems with extremely low print runs, if not /1.

  32. love the set – question is there a follow-up series or set with additional players?

  33. Pulled Derek Jeter auto in retail 3 pack, and just pulled Aaron Judge rc auto (purple parallel) from a box. Both are for sale. If interested email

  34. Would like to have seen more of the fortune teller cards. 20 is not enough. 100 would be good so that each team would have been represented.
