After over a decade riding the bench, 2017 Topps Gallery Baseball returns to the collecting world as a Walmart-exclusive release. Not seen since 2005, the artistic MLB brand offers multiple retail formats, including a Collector box with two autographs.

Similar to a hobby box, the Collector's Box includes 20 packs and retails for $69.99. 2017 Topps Gallery Baseball also has the seven-pack Value boxes for $19.99, which include an exclusive Artist Proof pack, and Fat Packs ($5.99) that contain 12 cards, with two Canvas parallels only issued in this format.

2017 Topps Gallery Baseball Base / Inserts

Drawn by Mayumi Seto, the base set merges 150 standard cards with 50 short prints. Within the SP grouping are many former greats. The 2017 Topps Gallery Baseball checklist also features several parallels, including one exclusive option for each format. The limited choices consist of Artist Proof (4 per Value Box), Private Issue (Collector Box), Canvas (2 per Fat Pack), Green (#/99), Blue (#/50), Orange (#/25), Red (1/1), and Printing Plates (1/1).

2017 Topps Gallery Baseball Cards 2

Using prior Gallery sets as inspiration, the 2017 Topps Gallery MLB inserts largely display the skills of artist Dan Bergren. The Expressionists opts for artwork images with more feeling than the standard baseball pose, and Hall of Fame Gallery only showcases the Cooperstown greats. Borrowing from 1951 Bowman, Heritage provides the iconic look for top current players in art form, while Masterpiece skews more to the '90s with dual images for one player.

2017 Topps Gallery Baseball Autographs / Sketch Cards

Adding a sticker autograph to many of the designs, the main signed set in 2017 Topps Gallery Baseball is the Base Autograph parallel. They also have limited Green (#/99), Blue (#/50), Orange (#/25), and Red (1/1) versions. In addition, there are insert autographs for select players in The Expressionists, Hall of Fame Gallery, Heritage and Masterpiece sets, plus Cut Signatures for all-time legends.

2017 Topps Gallery Baseball Cards 4

Finally, documenting every image in the product with hand-drawn sketches, the Artists Originals chase is a one-of-one hit signed by the artist. The sketch cards are only in Collector boxes.

Product Review

2017 Topps Gallery Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Trey Treutel

Good: Mostly great artwork; good insert selection; original pieces in play.

Bad: Sticker autographs; massive signers list with a lot of duds; retail release means availability is inconsistent.

The Bottom Line: As a collector that gravitates to things that are different from the norm, I think 2017 Topps Gallery Baseball is an appealing choice for those wanting something fresh. I don't think it's worth paying more than retail, but if you can track down a box, there's a lot of cool stuff inside.

Staff Rating:
3.8 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.0/5.0

2017 Topps Gallery MLB is a fairly traditional retail release with a base set, base autographs, and six main inserts. On the base design, the white border acts a frame for the hand-drawn player image. All in all, it's a fairly basic look outside of the image, but the gold foil accent for the name and brand logo is a welcome addition. I will say that I was surprised to see the base cards were all done by one artist (Mayumi Seto) as the detail varied a bit by the subject. Nevertheless, most looked great.

Inserts, on the other hand, were all done by Dan Bergren. Those looking for a little more design elements will likely enjoy the inserts, and Topps did a good job overall. Hall of Fame Gallery was a little bland for my tastes, but the throwback Heritage and dual-image Masterpiece both worked well. I was a little disappointed that the insert I was most looking forward to, The Expressionists, was also the toughest to hit at roughly 1:4 boxes. I think you should be able to pull at least one of these per box.

Given how nice the best design is, hard-signed autographs would really have pushed this over the top. Instead we get stickers. I guess that is to be expected at retail, but on-card would have been great here.

Checklist: 3.5/5.0

I did hear "sticker dump" mentioned about this set a few times, and while that term is thrown around a lot these days, with 98 signers in the main set, and a lot of weaker links in the chain, I can see how people might think that. With two autographs per box, that means a lot of Ketel Marte and Brandon Finnegan autographs floating around. I did appreciate that Topps at least indicated the SP odds on the box. Now if we could only get them to disclose the group odds for the rest of the checklist as a standard rule (or full print runs), then we'd have an accurate idea of what's out there for these non-numbered signatures.

Big autograph names include Jeter, Trout and Ichiro, plus several HOF players. As far as the rookies, both Judge and Bellinger are redemptions but at least they are in there.

While incredibly rare, I liked that each insert also had a signed version, since these autograph sets had the strongest lineups.

Value: 3.5/5.0

Given that the 2017 Topps Gallery Baseball autograph checklist is so large, the likelihood for a low-value signature is quite high. As the Collector Box has a $70 retail price for two autographs, value is not amazing. For me, the collecting appeal helped overcome that to an extent. However, the higher above SRP you go, the less likely you are to be satisfied.

The Fun Factor: 4.25/5.0

Because the brand has been off the shelf for so many years, the return of Gallery is very exciting. I can't understand why Topps would put one of their more unique sets in a retail-only format exclusive to Walmart, but hopefully most collectors have access to it at the retail price. Perhaps they can make it a standard hobby/retail release next, preferably with on-card autographs and only a minimal price increase.

Got three boxes from walmart.com for 69 bucks, card are very clean and look great IMHO much better than series 1,2 or opening day. Loaded with rookies if thats your thing, out of 60 packs parallels seemed to pull about 1 of 5 packs. the inserts looked nice hall of fame, masterpiece, and pulled one expressionists (nicely done) pulled a couple rookie parallels # to 50. the gallery heritage I did not like with the blcck block name took away from the card. auto’s were good (not on card) Severino to 25 and a Happ to 50. The private issusse #250 pulled about 1 to 3 packs # to 299 pulled a trout and machado. price is point is very good for 20 packs per box. I will be buying more of this

My first time to comment. I really love the set. Completed one for my own collection. Pulled an original painting card of Giancola Stanton. Checked all over the web to see if there is any pricing on these cards. Found one on e-bay that listed a 1/1 for Stanton at $399.00. However, I can’t find the number 1/1 on mine. I’ve checked everywhere. Did they put a 1/1 on these. Just curious and if this is a fair price for the card. I’m holding on to it until I have a reply about the 1/1 to see if mine has any value. In the 80’s I recruited for the AF at Ole Miss. GREAT SCHOOL.

Congrats on the sketch! Those are tough! They are considered one-of-ones but it does not appear that was actually noted on the artwork.

Hi Trey, it’s my first time posting & appreciate the work you do here. I have a question that maybe you can help me with. I’ve seen a few of the Base Orange parallel autos on eBay #/10 instead of 25 like the majority. Bryant is one of them. Do you have any insight on this?

I’m just getting back into collecting after 20yrs. I choose this set because the art struck my eye & boxes couldn’t be manipulated by hobby folk as a Wal-Mart exclusive. “Hitting4Dudes” comment above couldn’t have said it any better! I’m building a great set with plenty of love on the secondary market to keep it growing. Only drawback for me, besides the sticker autos, would be Topps selling “Blank Back” cards on eBay. Put them in the boxes! What in the random hell was that? Is this normal from them? Thanks Trey!

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

Thanks, Scott! Most often the main autograph sets have different print runs across the entire lineup. It normally just depends on the player and it is not uncommon to have short prints among the parallels, as well.

Topps does regularly sell the blank backs direct on eBay.

I may be a bit biased in my rating (or should I say obviously biased) but I picked up a few packs at Walmart the other day while shopping for other things and pulled an orange base auto of Ichiro (card 137) which is numbered 03/10.

i just bought 3 blasters at Walmart last night. Going to wait till Christmas to open them so i really dont have an opinion yet on the cards themselves. Unfortunately you have to be at the right place at the right time to buy some of these “exclusive products” which i think sucks but cool if you were the lucky one to get them. I collect because i love the game. Not because i think something might be worth something. I keep everything i pull out of packs. I think its neat when i have a card of someone that people are willing to pay stupid money for. I collect Don Mattingly and have 3000 different cards of him and i collect Topps sets from 69 (when i was born) to now. Im very much looking forward to opening my new Gallery packs and i wont be disappointed either way. Be glad that Baseball card collecting isnt what it was when i started in 1978. No inserts, no autos, no relics, no serial numbers. Plus there was only a Topps base set and that was it. So much has changed since then but the THRILL of opening a pack of Baseball cards will never change.

This set is not for everyone.,,Only the savvy collector realizes, regardless if sold in other stores, is a quality product. What’s not to like about it? For me, it has many factors why I’m acquiring as much as I can.

You have to understand, it’s all speculation, predicated on supply and demand. Which leads to a perfect segway, it’s the vintage. Like fine wines, in my opinion, is an outstanding crop of rookies who will carry and make this set valid for decades to come. That’s thee ONLY reason I am investing in this product. If I didn’t like the rookie class of that set, I wouldn’t waste my time on this or any other set…not even a little bit. In addition to the great rookie roster, these are tough to find retail, and I love it. I go to various Walmarts on a weekly basis and the majority are always sold out. I like the fact Topps put this out in late November and hopefully I can assume the print run on these is significantly lower than there standard base set you see still sitting on shelves as of this writing. How bout the SP’s those things are so tough? The fact it’s only 200 cards makes it feasible to build your own sets. Let’s not forget the incredible artwork that baseball card collectors should be gobbling up just based on that, not to mention the strong white matte finish on the card borders. True art absolutely beautiful. At 4 cards per pack in a blaster box or only 12cards in a so called jumbo pack, makes these cards a premium product. The fact that collectors can’t find these on shelves is great for the secondary market. It validates their worth and value. Why complain and be surprised? Isn’t that what we want to see in our hobby? Who wants cards that don’t sell on the secondary market? Exactly, I don’t know anyone either that does not want their cards to go up in value. This set has all those components to do so, we should embrace it. I know I do.

At the end of the day this set as well as any other has it’s up’s and well I’m sure others would say, downs. I just don’t see any significant enough yo mention. 2017 Topps Gallery stands out in the deep end of a watered down industry.

At the end of the day, this premium product is not going to strike every collector the way it does

I think this is a great product I pulled a frank thomas masterpiece painting original so the odds are pretty good imo not a huge fan of stickers but in the sps of dead legends it’s great so 5 stars great cards

Just spent over $120 on blasters and rack packs (since collectors boxes were already sold out at my Walmart). Zero hits unless you count an Archie Bradley /99 and Adam Jones /99. Severely Disappointed. I feel like this product is yet another Retail gimmick / sticker dump. Won’t buy this product in the future.

I have some cards that have a shadow of the players name. They are either above or below the name plate. Is this a misprint on the cards? I’ve made two sets. There are maybe 20 cards like this. Does anyone else know what this is. I can’t find any info on it. Thanks

Hey Trey, thanks for the reply to my question about the canvas card. You sure are right about people stretching the truth and twisting things to make cards sound like they’re worth more than they really are and to make them sell faster. You are definitely a wealth of knowledge about cards. Thanks again, Jim

Hey Trey, I understand the canvas cards only come in fat packs at 2 per pack. Do you have any information from Topps that the canvas cards are an SP? There are people on eBay selling them and calling them an SP. I don’t believe just because they only come in the fat pack that makes them automatically and SP but I thought I’d ask you if you have any information about this.

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

James: On eBay, SP can mean anything. Canvas is just an exclusive parallel. While technically it is short printed in comparison to the base cards, people will put anything in their eBay listings that they believe will help it sell. By that logic, all parallels are short prints.

Hey Kip, Topps knows card collecting is very addictive so they will do anything to pump out all kinds of cards to get people to buy them. If it’s not this store or that store exclusive it’s portrait cards. I wonder what they have up their sleeve for next year. The best thing to do is just not buy this garbage.

As always, these have grown on me. I would like to point out one thing that may not be clear to some folks.

I think that the SP’s do not have any parallels … at least not any that I’ve seen. I’m curious to see if they at least have a 1/1 version out. I have yet to see any different colored borders or other variations of the sp cards though.

Beautiful cards, but I’m petrified! Just picked up 2 monster boxes at my local wally world today and the second pack I opened contained an Aaron Judge auto redemption card….alas, when trying to reveal the code I found the silver coating impossible to remove and now have a damaged redemption card with no legible code. Contacted Topps customer service immediately, but don’t expect any satisfaction. I think I’m screwed!

Sflaman

I can’t rate it, I found a 69.99 box at wallyworld but can’t decide if I want to open or try my luck and sell in the bay. And insite.

I wish I could rate it.Can’t find it.This in the Chicago area?Had a hard time finding the 2015 & the 2016 Topps mega boxes and have not found the 2017 Topps Update mega boxes. Some of them on the internet for a minimum of 20% more and mostly for 90 dollars or more. Tops needs more control sales.Pricing has gotten way out of control.Come on MLB do something!

Rick,

The Collector Box for $69.99 is the “hobby box” for this set. It is being sold on eBay for $90 and up. I happened to be lucky enough to find it at Walmart on Thursday night (it was supposed to go on sale on Friday, I think). I was pretty pleased with the Springer hit. The rest of the 20 packs yielded 2 more cards numbered to 250, a Darvish green parallel to 99 and a Dee Gordon short print.

Rick

Darren Miller,

All for $69.00 a few dollars more you could have bought a hobby box for $94.00

reggie, you’re right Topps makes other deal for Exclusive with other Stores not just target and Walmart it is all a gimmick to sell their products and to get us collectors to but that’s all. Across the country other chains will have same exclusive products.

Rick
Rick

Tanner, you’re right, I think it is time Topps starts putting the Case/Boxes printing amounts on all blaster, packs, case, boxes, so we know what is worth our dollars or not.

Rick
Rick

Kip, I somewhat agree with you because I am still waiting for topps fire to hit walmart or target stores which been out for some time now but these stores have nothing to do with all the sports cards they shelve its all done by a third party company which has only one guy to stock all the stores in NYS and its now football and hockey season so he doesn’t stock any baseball unless people complain about having none in stores.

Darren Miller

Great design and artwork. I picked up a Collector’s box at my local Wal-mart and in the first 5 of 20 packs I pulled a George Springer Green parallel auto /99, a Ketel Marte auto, Bryant numbered to 250 and Robin Yount Blue parallel to 99.

This is not a total Walmart exclusive, the “collectors box” may be but

Just today another big box Midwest chain store had 10 blasters and 12 fat packs.

This chain has 8 locations within a 20 mile radius of the store I was in and numerous locations in Michigan alone and I know all 9 locations by me were stocked today with the exact same amount of this product

I didnt buy any as I dont care for “art” cards but I probably should have as the had buy one get one for 50% off plus an additional 10% off..

today this same chain also got stocked with 12 boxes of the mislabeled “walmart” exclusive Topps baseball holiday edition for the same discount.

Bought 2 of those to see what they are like and maybe pick up the what ever is left tomorrow

I’m not quite sure what to think of these just yet. I feel like I have been conditioned to prefer overly photoshopped pics instead of art work, lol! The artist has done a great job with these though.

While I’m glad this doesn’t have any /5s or /10s, I would love to know more about how many cases/boxes were made, and how rare some of these parallels are.

The Topps Fire cards for instance, has the Onyx and that is crazy rare, but not numbered.

Kip
Kip

This is getting ridiculous with all of the Target and Walmart exclusives. Most of these boxes will never find the shelves and the only way most people will get these boxes are on the secondary market. I will not be buying this box and hope this trend does not continue next year.

Just picked up 2017 topps Gallery blaster box I like this set Mayumi Seto does nice work the only thing i wished was done is having those Artist proofs with serial numbered; otherwise a nice set.
