Delivering on its name, 2017 Topps Doctor Who Signature Series is an autograph-per-pack release for the Doctor Who franchise. This hobby-only product yields a total of four signed cards in every master box.

Despite the focus on autographs, 2017 Topps Doctor Who Signature Series still maintains a 100-card base set that covers the entire timeline of the show. Led, of course, by the various doctors, other base subjects include aliens, allies, companions and villains.

Beyond that, it should not be all that surprising that 2017 Topps Doctor Who Signature Series is comprised of several different signed inserts. Falling in each pack, the autograph checklist includes over 70 subjects, with David Tennant as The Tenth Doctor and James Corden as Craig Owens. In addition to the base Autographs, collectors can also find multi-signed options via Dual Autographs and Triple Autographs.

2017 Topps Doctor Who Signature Series Product Review

Reviewed by Trey Treutel

Good: Massive autograph lineup, the definition of simplicity, decent rarity per box.

Bad: Very tough base set to build, little variety, only a few top-level autograph names.

The Bottom Line: Possibly the most basic Topps set in some time, Doctor Who Signature Series provides four autographs per box, and not much else. After many years of traditional formats that emphasize multiple inserts and/or even more possible hits, this could be a refreshing change for collectors, or leave them feeling unfulfilled.

Staff Rating:
3.6 / 5.0

Card Design: 3.75/5.0

It might be a shock for some, but 2017 Topps Doctor Who Signature Series has just one main design. Featuring the character name in a Doctor Who-decorated text box, the side and top of the frame displays a color that corresponds to the base (teal) or a few color parallels. Other than the character image, that’s about it. Backs leave space for larger bios.

Although the card stock is nothing of note, the glossy finish on the front has a very nice shine to it. Signed parallels add a sticker autograph and text that indicates the actor who played the character in the series. The only options that differ from this layout are the multi-signed cards, which are quite rare.

Checklist: 3.5/5.0

Topps Doctor Who Signature Series has a huge autograph checklist with 87 signers. If you are looking for depth, you’ve come to the right place. Naturally, the flip side to depth is the overall appeal of the subjects. Hardcore fans can better appreciate the more obscure subjects but the bigger names seem to be in relatively minimal supply overall.

Nevertheless, several key names are in the mix, including Jenna Coleman (Clara Oswald), Billie Piper (Rose Tyler), Alex Kingston (River Song) and John Simm (The Master), along with several of the Doctors. Even popular late-night host James Corden has a signed card based on his portrayal of Craig Owens.

Value: 3.5/5.0

Currently priced in the $95-100 range, the yield is decent considering you get four autographs when most entertainment sets deliver 1-2 for around the same price. Part of the difference there, however, is that non-sport autographs tend to be on-card, and you also get all or most of the base set and a good start on the insert sets.

As Doctor Who Signature Series has no inserts and the base set would require a lot of work to build, collectors must decide if four random sticker autographs are worth the price of admission.

While it varies based on the character, the low-numbered base parallels do provide some moderate value. Although you are very unlikely to pull one, the Dual and Triple Autographs cards are another source of value.

The Fun Factor: 3.75/5.0

For me, 2017 Topps Doctor Who Signature Series is stuck in a place where it’s not a low-end, flagship-type set, but also not really a one-pack, hit-heavy product. While I would have liked more variety, I appreciate the simplistic nature and realize it might directly appeal to collectors who just want base and autograph cards without all the fuss.

I guess what I don’t understand is why they didn’t just make the packs into jumbos so collectors could more easily build the base set while still maintaining the hit-per-pack selling point.

I got a triple autograph card with piper, agyeman, clark, with silver 1/5 on it. Any idea what that’s worth?

I’ve been trying to research all three series online (2015, 2016, and 2017) in hopes of finding an answer so perhaps you can help me. In the 2016 series at least, I’m not sure if they continued this type, there appears to be two different kinds of costume relic cards? The ones with larger series of 100, rhat’s what I saw for one character anyways, some characters seem far larger at 400-600 … But then I’ve something called “Parallel” relics that seem limited to 10 cards?? What is the difference if the costumes fragments are all from official wardrobe pieces?

And, on the chance I do get some assistance here, I suppose I’ll ask to be sure. Are these the only two types of costume relic cards or are there more? Also, any idea why they cut out costume cards from the 2017 set? There might not be as much available from the older new seasons now, but certainly there’s a lot from Twelve’s run alone, if not stuff to be scrounged up from Eleven’s too (and heck, those neglected from Nine and Ten, along with the appearances made in the Anniversary episode).

Thanks in advance for humoring me!

Elle: Parallels are a common feature in the trading card world. Fundamentally, there is no difference between these and the main versions of cards. However, they are more rare than the base edition of the card, and, as you stated, many are numbered to a specific production number. Although both are for Doctor Who, the sets you are referring to in 2016 and 2017 are different sets, so that is why they have different options (Timeless vs Signature Series).

Any idea what the cost per pack will be? Some of the early estimates per box are around $80 but with only 4 packs to a box, that would make this a pretty costly set to collect.

I’m seeing $85-90 per box in pre-sales right now so roughly $20-25 per pack.
