Again bringing collectors the flagship design with a shiny finish, 2017 Topps Chrome Baseball continues the long-running brand for another MLB season.
Collectors can expect a pair of autographs in every Hobby box while Jumbo offers five signed cards.
2017 Topps Chrome Baseball Base and Inserts
Showcasing the top options from the Series 1 and Series 2 lineup, including the key rookies, the 2017 Topps Chrome Baseball checklist works with a large assortment of parallels. This includes Refractor, Prism Refractor, Negative Refractor, Purple Refractor (#'d), Blue Refractor (#'d), Green Refractor (#'d), Blue Wave Refractor (#'d - Hobby/Jumbo), Gold Refractor (#'d), Orange Refractor (#/25 - Hobby), Red Refractor (#/5), SuperFractor (1/1), and Printing Plate (1/1) versions.
Inserts are also plentiful in 2017 Topps Chrome Baseball. 1987 Topps Baseball puts current players on the familiar wood design while Future Stars tackles the young talent of the league. Taking a more elaborate approach, Freshman Flash utilizes a very bold look for rookie subjects. Applying Chrome to the Series 1 insert, Bowman Then & Now returns with a design that highlights early Bowman cards for top players. There is also the case-hit MLB Award Winners insert, which features a regal design.
In addition, these inserts include Orange Refractor (#/25 - Hobby), Red Refractor (#/5), and SuperFractor (1/1) parallels. Most also come as low-numbered Autograph parallels.

2017 Topps Chrome Baseball Product Review

Good: Bellinger and Judge rookies; on-card rookie autographs and many Refractor parallels.
Bad: Higher box prices make value tougher; very hit-or-miss box/case results.
The Bottom Line: Chrome is a big release each year for several reasons and all those contribute to the popularity in 2017. Likely due to the increased excitement based on the rookie options, it appears that there is a huge production run. That makes these much riskier compared to previous years, but the payoff can also be much more substantial.
Card Design: 4.0/5.0
The chromium finish is something that can enhance the design but not ultimately change it. Because 2017 Topps Chrome Baseball uses flagship for the core design, collectors have likely already decided their thoughts on the 2017 look. I will say that I feel the Chrome effect does seem to pull attention away from the interlocking nameplate, which is a good thing as I feel this component dominates the base flagship design.
Refractors are again a huge factor with various colors and exclusives to locate. While base Refractor and Prism versions, which really pop, show up regularly, color seems a little sparse, with just a Blue and Negative in our review box.
Inserts do provide some postive additions to the set. 1987 Topps is just the Chrome encore from flagship, but Future Stars has a unique, colorful look and Award Winners features an understand elegance that I really enjoy. Then and Now is harder for me to appreciate as I don’t care for cards that have pictures of other cards as part of the design. I also would prefer a direct Topps Chrome reference versus Bowman Chrome.
This leads us to, arguably, the biggest reason for Chrome’s popularity: the on-card autographs. Obviously, two rookie names pushed the hype into overdrive. If Judge and/or Bellinger (or someone else) emerge as a lasting superstar, that fact will help keep this set high on the hobby radar for some time.
Checklist: 3.75/5.0
The primary checklist collectors are interested in would be the Rookie Autographs. Because 63 subjects fill this set, there is a lot of low-hanging fruit among the popular signatures for the likes of Judge, Bellinger, Benintendi and others. Perhaps surprising, 2016 had even more rookie signers, so this is not an anomaly. It just exposes the inherent risk of a checklist like this with unnumbered base autographs and a very large lineup.
With 200 cards in the base set, 2017 Topps Chrome Baseball has enough room to cover most key names, and there aren’t short prints, so building the set is a little easier, likely appealing to set collectors.
Although I am not a fan of having variations in every product, I think they are a solid addition here given the relative rarity (roughly 1:6 hobby boxes) and total of 25 cards. I also like that they made them all Refractors this year, which sets them apart a little bit more. I still see little need for the variation Refractor parallels, but they are so rare that it’s not much of an issue.
Value: 3.25/5.0
Out of the gate, box prices surged well beyond the point most boxes could deliver. Because hobby box prices are already cooling off, value is getting better. Sitting around $110+ at the time of this review, it is still risky, but that’s the game. There is huge value potential but the box-by-box experience is much more unlikely to pay off.
The Fun Factor: 3.5/5.0
As a Chrome fan, it is generally safe to assume I will enjoy almost any box of Chrome. It almost pains me to say it, but the relative void of color, combined with redemptions for both autographs, put a serious damper on the fun for this specific box. Of course, they won't all be like this, and the cards do look pretty nice.

Seriously, Topps… have you started locking these future used car salesmen into rooms with 100,000 cards to sign each? Let’s be real, can’t expect a BOOM each and every time. That’s just not realistic at all. But holy smokes… you see the same nobodies over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and (getting the picture?)…
It’s like the past few years of ever expanding set sizes, SP floods, mass produced Upper-Deck-esque products, huge let downs like 2017 Ginter (more napkin relics for your $100 box anyone?), you’re triple-dog-daring Panini to take your licensing.
Here’s a title for a book for anyone feeling like writing one… “Junk Wax Era: Lessons Not Learned.
