2017 Panini Diamond Kings Baseball Variations Guide

2017 Panini Diamond Kings Baseball Variations Guide

Spread across many eras of baseball, the 2017 Panini Diamond Kings variations feature Hall of Fame legends, established stars and young players with potential. With 24 players in the main checklist, the cards mirror the art-like feel of the base set, adding only minimal image changes.

Although having the 2017 Panini Diamond Kings Baseball Variations checklist ahead of time does give collectors an easier path, the simple differences can make it more tricky to determine the base versus the variation. Also compounding this issue is the fact that the base parallels are the same as the variations. This means it could take a little time to identify which is which.

However, Panini did collectors a solid with a cheat for knowing when the card is a variation. According to Panini, the clear answer comes on the card backs. A square-framed image on the back means it is the base while circle-framed images are only found on the variations.

An exception to this appears to be the rookie players (#126-175), like Moncada, who have circle frames on both the base and variation versions.

Other back differences include the card number placement and basic info /stats. Collectors can also be on the lookout for the cards that are backwards in packs as this is how the variations were issued. Even with this addition, the variation for some players is not immediately clear. As a result, it might take a few days to sort it out.

Beyond the 24 players with a second set of images, rookie Dansby Swanson has a variant version for the bio section on the back. However, the front images are the same.

All the 2017 Panini Diamond Kings Baseball variations include Green Framed, Grey Framed, Red Framed (#/99), Artist's Proof Gold (#/99), Brown Framed (#/49), Artist's Proof Blue (#/25), Blue Framed (#/5), Black Framed Masterpiece (1/1), and Masterpiece (1/1) parallels.

Card images will be added as quickly as possible. Please email us directly if you have any missing images or info.

I have three Yoan Moncada with circle image on back and the picture is the same as the base you show here.

If you read the section where we talk about the circle and square differences, you will see we note that rookies are an exception. Both Moncada cards have circle frames on the back.

Now everything checks out with the circle back trick as compared to your gallery except two cards: The Corey Seager and Don Larsen. As of the writing of this note, the Larsen action is shown as the variation but that has a square back, So that needs to be moved over to the base variety (assuming the circles and squares are the final arbiter)The circle back variation is a closeup. On the Corey Seager , if the circles and squares are correct, they need to be flipped as on the square back version he is looking up and on the circle back version he is looking into the pitcher. By the time you receive this note , you may already have made the corrections. :) Thanks again for your service to the hobby!

I see you moved the Joe D is over on your gallery so now it works. By the way, thanks for all the great work you do on displaying these variations and on producing the lists! You do a great job!

Thanks, Gary. We try our best to help collectors.

I have the DiMaggio you show as Base but it has a round back. Havent checked others but for starters that sounds like the round back trick doesn’t work.

Weird. That circle v. square info came straight from Panini.
