Product Details
Although the High Tek brand is not new to the hobby, 2017 Bowman High Tek Baseball sees the unique set extended to top MLB prospects for the first time. With that shift comes a prospect-friendly format that totals four hard-signed autographs per box.
Tapping into the recent history of the High Tek sets, the debut product greatly increases the hit yield compared to the standard MLB release that previously contained just one signed card.
2017 Bowman High Tek Baseball Base / Parallels / Inserts
Similar to other sets under the brand, the 2017 Bowman High Tek Baseball checklist includes multiple acetate base Patterns of varying rarity. Along with that comes limited parallels, including Green Rainbow, Gold Rainbow (#/50), Orange Magma Diffractor (#/25), Red Orbit Diffractor (limited), Black Rainbow (1/1) and Black Galactic Diffractor (1/1).
Extending the base design to first-year players are the 2017 Bowman Rookie cards. Reaching back to the past, the case-hit 1992 Bowman Variation cards offer budding stars on the '90s design. Bashers is the most elaborate of the bunch, focusing on the big hitters amongst prospects and younger MLB players.
2017 Bowman High Tek Baseball Autographs
Providing four on-card signatures per box, 2017 Bowman High Tek Baseball works within the base design in the main Autograph set. Also like the base cards, these have a mix of parallels. Choices include Tidal Diffractor, Green Rainbow, Gold Rainbow, Orange Magma Diffractor (#/25), Red Orbit Diffractor (#/5), Black Rainbow (1/1) and Black Galactic Diffractor (1/1).
Lastly, there are also signed versions for the 1992 Bowman Variation, Rookies and Bashers inserts.

Patterns
In comparison to prior sets, the 2017 Bowman High Tek Baseball patterns are more subtly varied and slightly tricky given the main design all looks the same on the left, and just the design portion to the right changes. And, while several have distinct looks, a few showcase more basic changes grouped around a section of lines at the middle of the card and/or arrows. Many in this group also have large Bowman logos. It is believed these are all part of one main pattern segment (Pattern 3*).
Patterns are listed in order of apparent rarity. Let us know if you spot anything different by emailing us directly (with images, if possible). Box odds are provided for the less common patterns.

Product Review
2017 Bowman High Tek Baseball Product Review
Reviewed by Trey Treutel
Good: Only acetate cards and on-card signatures; Rhys Hoskins autographs; new brand for prospect collectors.
Bad: Easy to see High Tek for just prospects as unnecessary; four-autograph box format can get pretty expensive compared to value; can be a little confusing with no pattern names.
The Bottom Line: The cards look great and the format is more geared to autograph collectors, so it certainly has appeal. The real question is whether you want to collect prospects in this manner.
Card Design: 3.75/5.0
Tek is all about acetate and the patterns, and the 2017 Bowman High Tek Baseball design doesn’t stray from that. I’m not sure if this is someting just for the Bowman version, but I found that the half-circle shape on the left dominated the focus. Since this comes on every version, it did detract slightly from the pattern appeal for me.
The on-card autographs stick with the main pattern, which is fine, but without any clear area to sign, it can lead to less ideal placement. While this is not a new issue for Tek, the stock design element on the left is darker, so it can be a little harder to pick out the signature if they go left.
I did like the look of the inserts, especially Bashers, but as they are each numbered to 75 or less, all act as case-hits or even tougher pulls. I personally think they should be one per box.
Checklist: 3.5/5.0
Aside from the typical issue with inconsistent team coverage, the 2017 Bowman High Tek Baseball checklist is fine. Honestly, with just 56 base cards, it makes me wonder why they didn’t just add it to the main 2017 Topps High Tek, especially given the expanded box format.
Led by Rhys Hoskins, the 43-card base autograph checklist contains the bulk of the signatures you can expect in a box. Most of these are prospect names that have been used multiple times in the past, so it remains to be seen how much demand there will be down the road. Plus, at four signed cards per box and a fairly moderate checklist size, duplicates are more common.
Although heavy on prospects, a few of the inserts cover rookies and MLB stars like 2017 rookie Aaron Judge, and veteran standouts Mike Trout and Kris Bryant, with main versions and signatures. These provide more depth and value, but as they are also much more limited, they are unlikely to tempt a non-prospect collector to try their luck. Another 2017 rookie, Cody Bellinger is actually part of the prospect base set but is not a signer.
Value: 3.5/5.0
Priced at about $90+ per box when this review was written, value obviously depends heavily on the four autographs. Because they are signed on-card and look fairly unique, that helps, but history has shown that prospect autographs that aren’t Bowman Chrome tend to take a backseat. Hoskins is arguably the biggest option and even his autograph values have been on the lower side. With staples like Bowman, Bowman Chrome and Bowman Draft, plus the regular Topps High Tek, 2017 Bowman High Tek can easily get lost in the shuffle, hurting values.
The Fun Factor: 4.0/5.0
While I do think this is perhaps an instance where a spinoff was not the way to go, I did like the 2017 Bowman High Tek Baseball box, mainly because the cards look nice. Hitting two autographs from the same player, even if one is a parallel and the other is base, is not ideal, but the more signed cards per box, the bigger that risk becomes. This is especially true when there are more signed cards in a case than subjects in the main autograph set. I do think a pattern notation is the way to go on card backs in the future.
