Product Review

2017 Bowman Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Trey Treutel

Good: Pretty impressive Chrome prospect signers list, retro Chrome inserts look good, WBC cards are a nice addition.

Bad: Refractors tougher to come by, shrinking base set.

The Bottom Line: Bowman is an institution and 2017 has not changed that. There aren’t many mid-level sets that provide the potential value and massive hits that Bowman does. If you are a prospect collector, this one is hard to pass up.

Staff Rating:
3.9 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.0/5.0

To be honest, I still have not fully processed the main Bowman design. It’s definitely a mashup of several elements with subtle framing and frosting, a blurred background, and a loud, jagged design for the team logo. I’m inclined to say that I mostly like it, especially when compared to the design from 2016.

I do find that a lot of the base images feel dark, which does bring the vibe down. However, based on other cards I have seen online, this seems to allow the Refractor color to shine just a tad bit more. Since my box delivered one Refractor parallel, and no color, I can’t yet speak to that first-hand.

Paper parallels are hardly a big draw in this product, but those Silvers are nearly impossible to eyeball on the first pass. Be sure to check the backs for serial numbering to make sure you didn’t miss one.

From there, it’s the Chrome Prospect Autographs with on-card signatures and many, many Refractor parallels. Obviously, this is what makes the product move.

I really don’t like the idea of constant retro inserts that do nothing more than repackage old designs, but, man, some of these look great in chromium. 1951 Bowman Chrome pops off the card with the artistic look and '48 Chrome seemingly does so much with so little. I also greatly enjoyed the 1992 Bowman-style, casual images for a few of the current players. Another appealing choice in my book is the Rookie of the Year Favorites design that has a '90s feel to it.

Checklist: 4.0/5.0

It's hard to please everyone, especially team collectors, but the 2017 Bowman Baseball checklist hits many key names and the Chrome Prospect Autographs set did a pretty good job, in my opinion. Sure, there is some repetition, and a few prospects that are too far down the list, and a heavy dose of International free agent signings, but there are also top draft picks and some big-time value.

I do notice the trend of the diminishing base set in Bowman. Base cards and rookies comprised 220 cards in 2014 and are now down to 100 cards this year. Prospects, on the other hand, have gone from 110 to 150 in the same period. As this product is synonymous with prospects, I see the appeal of this change but also realize that it might not work for everyone.

Admittedly, the addition is not huge, but I did like the wrinkle of adding in a few WBC cards to the main set. On the flip side, I could do without the stamped buybacks that are everywhere lately.

Value: 3.75/5.0

By the box, 2017 Bowman Baseball has decent value, but when you add in the potential at huge hits, it can be off the charts. Make no mistake, the big hits are very difficult to come across. If you pull a weaker signer and no color, like my hobby box delivered, value is almost nonexistent. That’s the gamble here, with the extreme upside being low-numbered parallels or even a SuperFractor. Still, just one autograph for around $100 per box (at the time of this review) is a bit steep.

The Fun Factor: 3.75/5.0

In general, prospects do not normally hold a strong position in my collecting interests. Despite this, the excitement of what could be waiting makes it more enjoyable even if it ultimately doesn’t deliver. Obviously, I would have liked some color in my box, but I did enjoy the throwback inserts and the thrill of the hunt. Plus, who knows how this group will look in a few years. We might all be searching back through stacks of 2017 Bowman Baseball cards for that unexpected superstar.

Can you please answer this for me. How come the 2017 Bowman Chrome Chance Adams, some of them say “1st Bowman Card” and some of them don’t. When he had a 2016 Bowman Chrome Card. That card doesn’t even say “1st Bowman Chrome Card”. Could you clear this up for me? Thanks. Also, I find that these Bowman Chrome cards are much more valuable and harder to find, than the actual Bowman Chrome set that comes out at the end of the season. If we as collectors know this, then how come we even buy the late “Chrome” set knowing full well that these cards are rarer?

As an avid football fan for many years, I decided to try my luck on some 2017 Bowman baseball. To my surprise I landed 2 paper autos (Eddy Alvarez and Dinelson Lamet). Not huge names but nice to see some ink out of the 8 hanger packs I bought. Also snagged a few Judge and Bellinger rookies. I really love the inserts as well. I’m really digging this stuff!

I’m a big Josh Hader fan so if any of you land any short print Hader 2017 Bowman cards please let me know. Any red, black, superfractors or printing plates I’d be interested in.

I like the look of these cards but the prospects look as if they’re playing in an empty ballpark in some minor league ballpark. It almost looks like their posing instead of playing in a game. The cards are pretty nice though and I like the insert cards. I read about a month ago on cardboard connection that all the blue refractor serial number to 150 Chrome cards would be inserted into the paper only and once the Bowman Chrome was released there would be no blue refractors number to 150 in those packs, is that true or not? Please reply whenever you have time, Jim . Keep up the good work I love cardboard connection for its information on baseball cards and different sets Etc.

I’ve found Bowman to be the best retail product for baseball and this year’s is the best yet. Last year my best pull was a Chrome Green Ref. Seager Rc Auto.— I bought my 1st ’17 Bowman Blaster 2wks ago and pulled a Chrome Green Moncada Rc Auto! Then This week I picked up 5 blasters and pulled 3 Green Chrome Ref. Autos: Acuna, Arroyo, & Torres! An Acuna Red Paper Parallel, Harper Blue Paper Parallel, and a Solak Green Shimmer Ref.! I’ll stop while I’m ahead and clean out Wally-World of the Platinum when they stock today! Looking for that Bellinger Rc Auto!!!

I opened 18 Jumbo boxes and a bunch of retail. Did amazing by pulling the Maitan superfractor auto out of one of my jumbo boxes. Also pulled various autos of Jimenez, Maitan, Torres, Rutherford, Groome, Adams, McKenzie. I love this product, but have bought all I’m going to buy.

I opened two jumbo boxes of this product. It was a good day lol! I pulled 2 Kevin Maitan’s auto’s and one was GOLD..this was in the same exact box! I also pulled a Gleyber Torres and Jason Groome autos in the other box. I was pretty satisfied overall with the look of the cards and I enjoyed opening the boxes.

What happened to the player on the field playing baseball? If l want to see artwork, I’ll go to the museum. Jim

The base cards and refractor cards have an OK design at best. It seems Bowman is trying to slowly phase out borders with the little pieces of border here and there. The Scouts Top 100 insert card design has totally left the tracks with some weird artsy design that doesn’t have any indication of baseball in the card anywhere.Hope next year’s design team at Bowman keeps the game in the card’s a little more.

It goes without saying that I love Bowman and Bowman Chrome products and this year is right up there in quality and player selection…
HOWEVER
… what the heck Topps??
I just picked up a Jumbo box yesterday with the anticipation of getting a good mix of singles and inserts, my 3 autos and perhaps that one rare gem…
Well, all 12 packs are open… and while I do have a nice little stack of shiny inserts, I seem to be missing something…How many autos in a Jumbo box? 3? Umm…
C.J. Hinojosa and T.J. Friedl… that was it? Seriously? $190 for 2 autos of guys with abbreviated names? S.M. Head and F.M. Life is more like it…

Trey and prufrock, I didn’t realize there was a different Bowman logo on the card until after I wrote the post. The description above does mention that the blue Bowman 70th anniversary card not numbered…I just find that very weird. Still a cool card but I feel the value is hurt without the numbering. Thanks for the replies though!

Trey and Dylan, I’m not sure anyone is still looking at this forum, but I thought I would jump in and see. I have pulled two of the blue parallels like Dylan described. Definitely no blue shimmer, definitely not #’ed, but both have a Bowman logo that is otherwise unique. I’ve gone through a few boxes and these two blue chromes are the only two cards to use the Bowman logo as part of the 70th anniversary logo (like the one stamped on the buybacks). I haven’t found any reference to them yet other than Dylan’s, so I’m on the hunt–Trey, have you found anything? If I am just missing something obvious or already discussed/answered, please just delete this post. But if anyone can shed some light on these mysterious blue parallels, please do share. Thanks

70th Bowman cards are a regular parallel listed on the pack odds and noted in the parallel section above. Dylan did not mention the different logo so I did not think he was talking about those parallels.

Any known print run on the 70th anniversary blue autos? Same odds as the gold autos but does it correlate? Awesome product this year. More roller marks on the autos than usual but that might help the value of the cards in the long run

The new Bowman looks great! I really love the design and the look of the cards. Probably some of the best Bowman sets in awhile. I do have a question for everyone. Blue parallels are supposed to be numbered right? I ask because I just pulled a blue parallel Austin Meadows that doesn’t have numbering anywhere. Is this a common error? And what should it be numbered out of?

The Blue Refractors are numbered to 150. However Blue Shimmer Refractors are not numbered. Does it have a wave in the pattern?

Kaizen… what do you mean no Aaron Judge rookie card?… I’ve literally pulled his base rookie like 5 times… It’s card number 32 from the base set.

As for the set itself… I prefer cards with borders, but these do look pretty nice in chrome. I’ve only done blasters and retail packs so far, but I may pick up a hobby / jumbo.

This product is overpriced & overvalued all autos picked out of 3 jumbo & 1 hobby box are all worth less then 5 bucks . That’s ten cards worth less then 50 dollars out of 700 spent, you do the math.

Me to. 70 veteran player cards. I like the old configuration 200 vets, 20 rc and 110 prospects….

Like inclusion of WBC players but Aaron Judge and Josh Bell dont get rookie cards but are in Bowman Hot 100 — weird

I miss the days when the base set wasn’t just an after thought for Bowman.

I didn’t pay attention to this product because Canseco wasn’t in it, but then I started seeing buybacks. Just when you thought the buyback train had left!

As usually hard to pull stuff in here especially the refractors these days. That aside I bought 5 of the blister packs that contain 22 cards at my Walmart. Thank God no one had rifled through them, bending the cards etc. let’s just say the dice were on my side. Here were my pills: most Rookies minus Moncada. Some odds and ends and I’ll list the 4 hits. Jharil Cotton silver /499, Dansby Swanson Bowman Scouts Top 100 #3, Giancarlo Stanton 1948 Bowman green /99, and Takahiro Norimoto Chrome Red Refractor #’d 1/5. That one had odds of 1:2,105!! So I was impressed. Granted I doubt I’ll get this lucky all the time-again Bowman is hard but it felt nice to pull some stuff out of only 5 packs.

I agree completely David B. There are zero Rockies in this year’s set that haven’t already been in other Bowman sets. It’s boring. I don’t mind some prospect cards, but I don’t need 100 of the same guy before he even makes the majors.

I appreciate Topps numbered much of the SP variations, but hate the lack of creativity otherwise present in the Heritage and Gypsy Queen product.
I also STRONGLY DETEST the buyback Rediscover inserts which is essentially a way to dump commons back into pack under the auspice they are now valuable.
I really like the retro 48, 51, & 92 Bowman inserts and thought the inclusion of WBC players in the base sets was a nice touch.
It also seems some of the parallels are ridiculous hard to pull – with the lowest base parallel being more difficult to pull than lowest paper prospect auto… Which would you rather have?
Maybe I got crazy lucky, but pack ratio odds seemed to overstate scarcity. My Target blasterbox and 2 additional packs (10 retail total) yielded 10 inserts.
1 – Talent Pipeline (Royals) – 1:11
1 – Buyback 93 Bowman Brant Brown – 1:12
1 – Paper Prospect Auto Leody Taveras (sticker) – 1:69
1 – 48 Bowman Mike Trout – 1:16
1 – ROY Favorite Josh Bell – 1:8
2 – Top100 Willy Adames, Phil Bickford -1:8
1 – Silver Prospect Parallel Franklyn Kilome (# to 500) -1:47
1 – Silver Base Parallel Kenta Maeda (# to 500) – 1:71
1 – Gold Chrome Prospect Parallel Jack Flaherty (# to 50) – 1:469
A great variety of inserts, but not necessarily a blockbuster player (Trout aside) but no complaints here.

I love bowman so it gets a 5 star rating. I went to buy my hobby box as soon as my LCS opened there doors. I brought the box home and ripped it open. There is a decent amount of color sprinkled in. I was deflated when I got my Auto however. A base Andrew Sopko. The Dodgers 28th ranked prospect….. I mean come on. This guy is almost not even on the scouts radar and I just paid $85 to be graced with his ASP signature. Disappointed to say the least but I’m not grading this product on my box. Cause the checklist is pretty damn good. I just hit a dud. Actually I probably hit the worst auto you can. Yeah just really disappointed. Fricken Andrew Sopko!!

Austin Slater is the Giants 19th ranked prospect. Please go away.

Holy crap Topps! There are over 4000 minor league baseball players out there and you guy still continue to run out the SAME 150 players year after year. I love Bowman and will still buy this product but how about you cut back on the 1000000 refractor parallels and do some research and get some fresh blood in here. Austin Slater of the SF Giants NEEDS A NEW CARD other than the 2010 Bowman AFLAC set.

I can’t wait till this stuff comes out. The Prospect Autograph Checklist looks absolutely loaded. I already ordered a Hobby and a Jumbo Box because I think the price will go up.
