User Rating:

Unlike many of the new products that gravitate more to wild designs or high-end formats, 2016 Topps Stadium Club Baseball stays true to its roots with quality photography and a moderate price point. Hit collectors are in luck as well as each box features two autographs.

Showcasing some impressive images, the base set stands at 300 cards. Several base parallels combine to fall one per pack and include Gold Foil, Black Foil (1:8 packs), Black and White Foil (1:48 packs - Hobby), Rainbow Foilboard (#/25), First Day Issue (#/10) and Members Only (1 per case). There are also 25 base card Variations with a limited print.

Keeping things simple, the primary signed options come as Autographed Base Cards and drop two per box. Limited parallels include Black (#/50), Gold (#/25) and Orange (1/1). Other autographs include Lone Star Signatures, with Gold (#/25) and Orange (1/1) parallels, and Co-Signers (#/5).

A popular insert from the 1990s, Beam Team inserts average one per box and also feature Gold (1 per case) and Autograph (#/5) parallels. Also returning from 2014, Legends Die-Cuts (1 per box) feature ten new cards and Gold (#/25) parallels. Collectors can also find 25 ISOmetrics cards at a rate of two per box. Limited Gold parallels fall one per case.

Building on the insert total in 2016 Topps Stadium Club Baseball, Triumvirates feature a die-cut design and are grouped in trios with 30 total cards. Versions include Luminous (1 per box), Luminescent (1:4 boxes), and Illuminator (1 per case). A case hit exclusive to hobby, ten star players are highlighted in Instavision and there are also Gold (#/25) parallels. Contact Sheet adds ten cards with 1:8 odds. Parallels include White Foil (#/99), Gold (#/50) and Orange (#/25).

Tapping into the history of the product, additional content includes various stamped Buybacks and ten 1993 Autographed Buybacks (#/5).

2016 Topps Stadium Club Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Trey Treutel

Good: Base cards look great and there are some terrific images, all on-card autographs, box price is fair.

Bad: Huge base autograph checklist means the weaker names are likely the most common, inserts feel a bit stale, unstamped base buybacks did not seem to go over well.

The Bottom Line: 2016 Topps Stadium Club Baseball again hits the mark as a very attractive release which carries a moderate price tag. The huge hits are not here but, beyond that, this product is one of the better MLB values.

Staff Rating:
4.2 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.6/5.0

The base upgrade from 2014 to 2015 means that 2016 did not need as much tweaking. Honestly, I like the 2016 design the best of the three with just the block player name and small team listing underneath. It truly lets the photo take focus. Parallels are still subtle but, to me, that is the trade-off with so few design elements in play. I did get shorted on the Black Foil parallels assuming the listed odds of 1:8 packs is correct. I only pulled one. Curiously, I also did not pull a Legends Die-Cut, which is supposed to be a box hit at 1:16 packs.

Collation issues aside, the real strength of Stadium Club comes from the on-card autographs. Again, the signers list is over 70 subjects. This lends itself to some duds, of course, but there are some bigger names as well. Helping that is the fact that the autographs feature the quality of the base with hard-signed goodness. So, even if you pull one of the lesser signers, it still looks good.

Inserts are the final element of the set and arguably weakest link for Stadium Club. Triumvirates is not new but still looks nice. However, do we really need another die-cut insert with Legends? I get that most of these inserts are carried along each year, but why is that the case? Also, with such beautifully simple base cards, inserts like Contact Sheet and ISOmetrics don't really fit and looks like something from flagship. 2015 seemed to have a better attempt. The case-hit Instavision Highlights do look like they are one of the standouts based on the online images but they are much more limited.

While the design and finish are mostly to blame, it was frustrating to have cards with rough cuts or edge chipping straight out of the packs.

Checklist: 4.0/5.0

2016 Stadium Club sticks with 300 cards and it works well for deeper coverage without being too ridiculous. It does make the base set more a challenge, however.

Admittedly, it is a little disappointing that a brand that is based on great photography still made the jump to the variation game. Personally, I think it is nice to have a break from this oversaturation in the hobby and Stadium Club is one of the only sets that doesn’t need the additional images since there are already so many strong base photos. While the SP photos are mostly worthy, plenty of base cards have just as good, if not better, images. They should have just saved these for one of the other variation sets.

For most collectors, the main importance of the checklist deals with the autographs. This puts collectors in a bind since the total subject list is huge and most of the bigger names are less common.

I don't quite get the base buybacks included as an insert at 1:126 packs. Stadium Club is not a brand from way back and it was an odd decision to just randomly add unstamped cards from the 1990s.

Value: 4.0/5.0

What it really boils down to is what you value. A clean design, two on-card autographs per box and a focus on quality images certainly helps value but the big hits are not as much a part of Stadium Club which puts more expectations on the two signed cards. If you are looking for a great ROI, Stadium Club is still as much of a gamble as any other product. However, if are looking to collect something that looks good and also has the potential for some solid monetary gains, Stadium Club is largely unmatched among products under $100.

The Fun Factor: 4.3/5.0

2016 Topps Stadium Club Baseball is built to be fun. The price is not too high, the base set speaks volumes and the autographs are all hard-signed. Sure, you might not pull the best signers, but the rest of the pieces still work. Inserts are the main shortcoming and that is what slightly holds the set back.

Has anyone else run across a Sandy Koufax Members Only card? I received one in my pack and can’t seem to find any others listed anywhere so that I could get an idea of value.
Thanks!

Any news on the mystery redemptions? I pulled three of them!

I am shocked at how many autos/ #’d / Triumvirate inserts I have gotten in the Blasters this year. I have yet to purchase a hobby because I have been having really good luck with the $20 Blasters. Also been having good luck with Chrome as well as far as autos go and that never happened last year from the Blasters. Trust me, my luck stinks but not this year apparently. My first blaster I pulled a GOLD Corey Seager # /25! from that moment on of course I bought the rest off the shelf. Only 7 cards short of a full set with 8 Blaster buys. Also pulled 3 Buybacks – Bonds/Chipper/Smoltz or Glassine (I forget). This product is tight!

I love it. Great pictures, great feel, nice set.

Just opened up four hobby boxes, which left me 12 cards short of a full set. Beautiful cards as expected, and nice thick card stock. Autographs were of nobodies. Inserts are not too attractive in my opinion, except the die-cuts which are nice. Would like to see more/better inserts and less no-name autographs.

Great looking cards, nice inserts, lots of rookies and redemption autos are super !! How can one go wrong on this product ? ! 5-Star product for the cost !

The pictures are always great with these cards. I am not a fan of the die cut due to easily being damaged. There was a couple of cards that were damaged by the wrapping machine as the creases lined up with the box. The Black foil parallels look awful. I just dont understand who approved those. I also got a 1993 Barry Bonds Stadium Club card. No stamps, no auto, no nothing. With it being the 1993 card I thought maybe they forgot the auto. I looked everywhere on topps websites and all they say is stamped buybacks.

Really, who wants a 1993 Barry Bonds Stadium Club ungraded card. I can go buy a case of these cards for $20.00.

I also do not like the distribution of the cards throughout the packs. They appear to have standard packs that have the same main cards with only the inserts being different. Tons of duplicates.

I opened 2 hobby boxes and 4 blasters.

1 die cut Brooks Robinson Legend.
4 Triumvirate
Josh Donaldson – Luminescent
Buster Posey – Illuminator (Blaster)
Carlos Correa – Luminous
Bumgardener – Luminescent
5 Beam-Team (All Standard)
1 First Day Issue (Blaster)
Al Leiter
10 ISO Metrics (All Standard)
7 Contact Sheet (All Standard)
11 Black Foil (No Duplicates)
33 Gold Foil (2 Duplicates)
4 Standard Auto Cards
Peter OBrian
Trevor May
Francisco Lindor
Carson Smith
1 Black Parallel Auto

I love the look and the stock thickness is perfect for a card. I didn’t take any stars away from the fact that some of my cards are sticking to each other. So I would advise putting them in penny sleeves. While I had no damage from unsticking them apart, I can imagine if they are tucked in a shoebox for awhile the results may not be the same.

As for the Buyback question of whether they are stamped or not. I got a 1998 Barry Bonds and it is not stamped and has no other notation of being a BuyBack. It’s not touched.

I really enjoy this product, probably my favorite. Collecting the set and great pictures of some of my favorite players to name a few. I enjoy the parallels although I think one more numbered card would be cool, something like a negative look. It’s at a good price for what you get and there is plenty at retail stores as well. The rainbow foil card is one of the best insert parallels in the game!

Lou Casa … you pulled a Stadium Club Buyback card …. they are not stamped or anything

Love the Stadium Club Series! Beautiful HD resolution cards and fun fantastic inserts! By far the best product to buy for casual collectors as well as die hard fans! I do have a question though, what is this Tim Lincecum card #2 I pulled from a pack but it’s from 2008 SC set. Is this a rare throwback card? If so, why isn’t it in the checklist? Someone help me with this one

Is the Daniel Murphy (card # 202) an uncorrected error ??

the back of the one I have has someone’s Major League Pitching Record instead of Murphy’s Major league Batting Record … any news on this ?

Gave, a “buy-back” is simply added content, I.E Topps and their “Million Card Give-Away.”

The short and easy answer…most collectors will NOT want their cards embossed with, “buy-back.” If a dude with a Jones PC had a choice of ’99 SC issues…and one was marked “Buy-Back” and one was not…9 of 10 will gravitate to the unblemished card. Where the Buy-Back comes from isn’t relevant….so long as the issue is tight and gradeable.
Babe, while I, personally have never encountered a collector willing to pay a premium for such cards… there are always niche collectors out there.
Hope this helps!

My buddy hit an Instavision Highlight in a blaster – so not hobby only apparently.

So what’s with the Buybacks that are not stamped? I got a 1999 Chipper Jones, but how would anyone know it was pulled from 2016 Stadium Club? Does that even matter?

If, in great literature, “the word is the thing?” then surely powerful photography defines great trading cards.
This iteration of the venerable Stadium Club brand is defined by the compelling images that comprise the product. The photos…which are mounted upon sturdier stock than SC collectors are accustomed to, are crisp, well-composed, and each image tells a story.
From Lou Gehrig’s smiling visage to Jackie Robinson pounding around the basepaths to Mike Trout and his life-sized bobble head, the images Topps selected for the product are brilliant. That said, and while compelling images greatly enhance demand, this product is still driven by….autos! …Hard Autos ….hand-signed autos….on-card autos, whatever you call ’em….whatever helps you sleep at night, Stadium Club has ’em. The collation could be better, and I miss the days where a hobby box of “Stadium Club” meant that an eye-poppin’ “Co-Signers” on-card dual auto would emerge from the great pile of silver-foil wrappers, but it is hard to argue with the product Topps has delivered.
All things being equal, I think I’d see fit to stash a couple of boxes before the secondary market finishes shrugging off its early summer slumber. Stadium Club has a committed collecting base, and dollar figures for this product…in prior years, have been known to rise by as much as 25%.

I love this set, pics are awesome, card feel is great. But my 3 boxes had some AWFUL collation. I got 2 and 3 of some cards and none of many more. 3 boxes should yield roughly 300 base cards…which it did…the only problem is I’m missing 90 for a set and have 100 plus double and triples. Need another box and some good luck that I don’t get another of the same box again. It’s like buying Blasters at the Hobby level now. At least buying retail comes with the expectation of doubles….Come on Topps get with it.

Was able to pull a Nolan Ryan 1993 buyback auto 1/5! Other than his, I’ve only seen Don Mattingly buyback autos out there. Anyone else know of the others?

Pictures are great and cards feel nice overall. Other autos received were pretty subpar, but bought 2 boxes and didn’t get a single duplicate card!

My guess is the bigger name auto’s will be SP’S. I bought 3 boxes and got 6 subpar auto’s. Great photos. Also I pulled a 1st day issue and it’s not numbered. I don’t know if none of them are or just mine.

Topps has a history of shorting the Checklist. It was very evident in Football in the late 1970s. The NFC West teams such as the Falcons, Saints, 49ers, and AFC West trams Bronco’s Chiefs Seahawks and Chargers tended to have less players. Also, the Tampa Bay Bucs. In the 1970s they also did it with their NHL and NBA cards but it was not as evident as they were smaller set sizes.

Matt
Matt

I know the cards will be great but the checklist just like every other Topps product is so one sided. I love the Orioles but sometime I wish I was a Dodgers, Giants, Cubs, Yankees, or a Red Sox fan. Then I would get a card for every single player on the team. And still no Mark Trumbo!!!!!!! The guy has been a top the Home Run leaders all year long. The O’s traded for him back in December and only one card for him so far. Every one else that was traded in the offseason or signed already has a bunch of cards, except Trumbo.

Mike – I couldn’t agree with you more! Less hits and more parallels and inserts! I am giving this product a 5/5 for now based on the prelim pics I have seen of the card stock pics and inserts. Would drop this to a 4/5 if the hobby box price comes out as super high.

Can’t wait. Hope they never change this product. Interesting to see what a two hit SC product will cost. I didn’t care too much about my hits because I was going after the sets. Almost done with my gold set and black set.

The hits are a bonus but definitely not why I buy this product. I would like it to have no guarantee of a hit and just have more parallels and inserts. Hits drive the price on boxes up too much and when you are looking to just build sets. It sucks to wait so long till price drops.
