User Rating:

A new high-end entry from the Topps Baseball lineup, 2016 Topps Legacies of Baseball takes a premium look at America's pastime. Each box of the hobby-exclusive release includes two on-card autographs and one metal card.

This marks the first time that Topps Vault technology has been applied to a metal trading card. Dubbed Vault Metal, these polished aluminum cards drop one per box. Metal parallels are also available, including Purple Logo (#'d), Red Logo (#/25) and Black Logo (1/1).

While the metal cards will receive plenty of focus, 2016 Topps Legacies of Baseball does not skimp on signed cards. Collectors will find two on-card autographs per box, with several signed options. Tradition Autographs (#'d) celebrate former and current players who did things "the right way." Loyalty Autographs (#'d) feature those that spent most of their career with a single team.

Continuing the themed autographs, Tenacity Autographs (#'d) highlight the most passionate baseball players. Finally, Exhilaration Autographs cover the young players who play with tremendous energy. All autographs are available in Green (#'d), Purple (#'d), Red (#/5) and Black (1/1) parallels.

Mixing things up a bit, Legacies Book Cards feature a vertical orientation with on-card autographs and jumbo relics.

A pair of inserts close out 2016 Topps Legacies of Baseball. Lasting Imprints (#'d) celebrate all-time greats and Imminent Arrivals include the top rookie names of 2016, including Kyle Schwarber, Miguel Sano and Aaron Nola. Both inserts also come in Purple (#'d), Red (#/5), Black (1/1) and signed parallels.

2016 Topps Legacies of Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Trey Treutel

Good: Quality stock and design, on-card autographs, relatively low print runs across the board, overall good checklist.

Bad: High box price for two autographs and two inserts, don’t really see the need for the Vault Metals, no real originality.

The Bottom Line: 2016 Topps Legacies of Baseball certainly conveys high-end but the box price makes it harder to justify the four-card packs, especially when only two cards are signed. While there are some big hits, this debut product doesn’t feel new and instead just a hybrid of other products.

Staff Rating:
3.0 / 5.0

Card Design: 3.5/5.0

While it appears to be a mashup of other known brands from Topps, I still find the main design to be fairly impressive, albeit a little heavy on dark colors. Given the darkness and variety of colors, I do wish another ink was used instead of blue for the signatures.

Speaking to the high-end format, every card I pulled featured good stock — even the metal card — and each was serial numbered to 199 or less. However, a low-numbered insert probably does not belong here at this price and output. Also, the Vault Metal cards are interesting but I struggle to understand the purpose other than to fill space since they don’t match the design or feel of the product. I did appreciate that it was packed with its own sleeve as it is safe to assume it would have been badly scratched otherwise.

As far as the autographs, both were hard-signed and the yield included a Hall of Fame player and top rookie name. I did notice that the corners were a little nicked, which is a bummer in any break but certainly at this price.

Checklist: 3.5/5.0

Like any release, rookies are a large component of 2016 Legacies of Baseball, so that does hurt the overall checklist some, but I feel Topps did a better job keeping them from becoming too much of the product's composition. Add to that a solid crop of Hall of Fame talent and the checklist is actually pretty strong.

Value: 2.0/5.0

Make no mistake, there is the potential for something big in here, but the box price is way out of line with the end result. Maybe if all four cards were signed on-card, but two autographs (and two inserts with very limited value) makes it tough to swallow the $150-170 box price. Priced closer to $100 seems more reasonable.

The Fun Factor: 3.0/5.0

Quality impresses me even if the design is not fresh. 2016 Topps Legacies of Baseball has that going, for sure. The problem is that if you are selling high-end, base inserts and random metal cards don’t really go along with that. I admit that the Vault Metal card confused me and the insert left me thinking it should have been signed. This did detract from the fun.

Panini baseball is not the answer. Panini will just throw sticker autos on everything, and drive down the prices of low numbered autos. Topps does a great job of getting on card autos.

TOPPS you can do soon much better. This product is overpriced for an just an ok product. My case rip was ok, I just expected more for the price. Where is the good old UPPER DECK QUALITY set for a good price. Topps the product was average at best.

Nothing new except the naming.
And the brand would be gone in a few years, right? Waste of money.

Wow! $150.00 a box for 4 cards. A numbered parallel, a worthless metal card, and 2 autos. Its products like this that ruin card collecting. This product is a pathetic attempt by Topps to attract High-end collectors. Dynasty is junk. Legacies is junk. I dont know who thought this product up, but they need to find another profession. Topps needs to stick with the lower end products and leave high-end products to Panini. Hopefully soon Panini can get the rights to Baseball!

Participated in a case break today. I hate to say it but the product looks like a mixture of Valor and Inception. The case hit was an Ichiro Book with auto and a great patch #/10. Other than that…meh. Mark Prior auto in this high end product? I think they should include another auto for this price point.

Would like to see some different players with autos in these sets. That’s what I like about Panini is you see a lot more variety of players signing. If Panini would just get a license so it doesn’t have the look of a card I got out of a box of macaroni & cheese or Jiffy Pop popcorn. Give me some Lou Whitaker or Julio Franco or Spike Owen autos. With that being said I’ll wait to see the product opened before I make a review of the product but the lack of uniqueness in the checklist doesn’t excite me.

Obviously there is a huge a amount of risk involved with these high end products but for most it seems the risk to reward ratio is definitely skewed.

Seen loads of museum getting broken and have yet to see a decent hit. Same with five star.

Far too many products in this price range, they should just focus on one or two and make them amazing.

I’m a fan of triple threads so I’ll save my money for those.

Always showing pics of possible super nasty hits from these high-end products, then the product is released, and…BOOM, nothing but super nasty bulls**t cards are getting pulled, or over produced rpa’s of a top player. I know this is a review on Legacy’s, but I’ve seen this example happen, and still is…2015 Museum…Just how many Todd Gurley rpa’s did they produce, and you truly can’t believe that man signed all 5000{not a actual known #, just a smarta** one} of them himself. Out of the last 6-7 case breaks of Museum, it seems like Gurleys rpa’s are showing up in every 3rd-4th box. What happened to “Rare” hits. It was lost when $$$ became the main & only concern of these card companies….baseball & football.

The design looks appealing.
The checklist seems to be loaded with stars I like.
The metal card appeal with high end photos should draw top end interest.
I see nothing but upside.
A+++

Enough already. Overpriced redundancy with a new name and look is still overpriced redundancy. How many times can this company redesign and repackage the same old thing? No, thanks.

Who do I need to write a letter to at Topps so I can get some Rays cards included on a high end checklist?

While I am a BIIIIIIG fan of the ’16 Five-Star Baseball ….as well as Museum Collection Football, the overwhelming majority of Topps products are just …garbage. Replete with meaningless parallels, punctuated by single color jersey swatches that are commons before the box is even opened, and stocked with $5 autos (if that) of players that I have duplicates of ….the greed of Topps may only be eclipsed by the ineptitude of their fulfillment department.
Nuff’ Said.

I think these cards look awesome. I have always loved the look of Fire and Valor but really only collect baseball and I don’t really recall this look being in a baseball product so I am excited for this release. I love collecting, it is such a fun hobby, cant wait to hopefully try a box or two.

Justin
Justin

Can we not consolidate all the high end stuff? I mean really! we got dynasty, tier one, five star, supreme, strata, tribute……seriously! Too much! I am boycotting this high end production! Who’s with me?

Mike Pereira
Mike Pereira

So I guess Topps is just mixing products together and shipping whatever comes out because this looks like Topps Fire and Topps Valor had a baby and it’s name was “GIVE ME ALL YOUR MONEY”. Topps is becoming the EA Sports of the hobby world. Just pumping out half ass garbage and putting a huge price tag on it so people will think it’s valuable.
