Similar to the other Heritage releases of the year, 2016 Topps Heritage Minor League Baseball uses the 1967 design as its guide. While the box yield sees a decrease in total cards — and one less autograph — from the previous year, collectors will be thrilled that the hobby-only set now includes hard-signed content.
Mirroring the main 2016 Heritage look, the 200-card base set incorporates League Leaders cards that highlight the statistical standouts from 2015. Parallels include Blue Border, Peach Border (#/25), Black Border (1/1) and Printing Plates (1/1). Additional options come in the form of base Short Prints and Variations.
There is also a limited Base Card Mystery Redemption that offers a top 2016 MLB Draft pick in their MiLB uniform.
Promising one autograph per box, 2016 Topps Heritage Minor League Baseball has several design options that showcase the on-card signatures. The primary signed set is the Real One Autographs that feature the base design. Blue Border, Peach Border (#/25), Black Border (1/1) parallels add to that. There are also Attributes Autographs that present a comic book theme and Looming Legacy Autographs that utilize a design reminiscent of the 1960s. Both also come as one-of-one Black Border parallels.
On the relic front, 2016 Topps Heritage Minor League Baseball also offers one per box. Clubhouse Collection Relics feature game-used memorabilia and are joined by Peach (#/25) and Black Patch (1/1) parallels. Featuring actual 1967 coins, '67 Mint Relics include a nickel while the Peach (#/25) and Black (1/1) parallels substitute a quarter.
Among the traditional inserts are 1967 Topps Stickers that are inspired by the original stickers but are not actually stickers themselves, and Minor Miracles that document unlikely performances.
Giving collectors another thing to shoot for, the "Make Your Pro Debut" promotion returns and allows one lucky winner a chance to suit up for the Durham Bulls minor league team.

2016 Topps Heritage Minor League Baseball Product Review

Good: On-card autographs, strong overall signer list, fair pricing.
Bad: Very basic set with limited variety, Clubhouse Collection relics are getting really stale.
The Bottom Line: Taking the positives of the MiLB set and adding hard-signed autographs and a great selection of young talent and current stars, 2016 Topps Heritage Minor League Baseball is one of the best minor league sets in recent memory and one of the top values of 2016.
Card Design: 3.75/5.0
While it is yet another set in the ’67 design, the Heritage Minor base cards at least feel a tiny bit new given the full team name listing on the card front compared to just the team’s nickname like the main MLB set. Also, the parallels are all numbered, and offer pastel colors, which is different from the main set.
The biggest upgrade to the design is the switch to on-card autographs. While it meant a drop from two autographs to just one per box, it seems like a fair compromise. Returning after being dropped in 2015, variations carry a specific theme and are not overly done. Found in either facsimile autograph or error versions, these actually add something to the basic set. The variations were also applied to the base autograph list, offering a level of rarity to go along with the on-card autograph. These SP autographs removed the team name from the front of the card.
The only other regular inserts besides the tired Clubhouse Collection relics are the Sticker inserts and Minor Miracles. While not actually a sticker, the amusing cards offer the retro sticker look in a floating head design.
Although the cartoon design might not appeal to all, I also liked the playfulness of the very rare Attributes Autographs.

Dropping the base set by ten short prints, this should make the full set a little easier to build. For collectors, the main appeal of the checklist is likely the concise base autograph list of 20 up-and-coming players, plus the full variation parallel. Adding to that are the limited Attributes and Looming Legacy Autographs, which feature current MLB stars from their MiLB days.

Perhaps the best value of the year, 2016 Topps Heritage Minor League deserves a look from most baseball collectors even if you aren’t normally a fan of minor league sets. Priced at around $40 per hobby box at the time of this review, that gets you one on-card autograph and one relic as well as some numbered parallels. Yeah, there aren't any massive hits, but the collecting and monetary value are both solid.

It will never carry the mainstream hobby appeal of a Bowman set but 2016 Topps Heritage Minor League Baseball is simplicity at its finest. I personally would have liked another insert option but it was truly an enjoyable experience. It is always nice when a a few tweaks can take a product to the next level, and that is what I feel has happened here.
