User Rating:

Taking a trip back in the Topps brand history, 2016 Topps Gold Label Baseball revisits the line that is remembered for quality and elegance. Every box includes one framed autograph with a hard-signed signature.

Focusing on a premium design and on-card signatures, the hobby-only release is not quite as simple as it seems. While a total of 100 current players and former greats are featured in the base set, all subjects have three different versions: Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3. Each card includes an image duo for the player and every class showcases different pictures.

The tiered rarity extends to Blue parallels with Class 1 (1:2 packs), Class 2 (1:6 packs) and Class 3 (1:20 packs), and also to Red parallels with Class 1 (#/100), Class 2 (#/50) and Class 3 (#/25). The toughest of the group are the Gold parallels for each class that are numbered 1/1.

Outside of the base and parallels, the only other option in 2016 Topps Gold Label Baseball is the Framed Autographs. Averaging one per box, they are all signed on-card. Versions include Gold Frame, Black Frame (#/50 or less) and Platinum Frame (1/1).

Collectors can also find the full base set with numbered 5x7 oversized editions through Topps.com.

Trey is a lifelong sports fanatic. He is a huge fan of the NBA and NFL, as well as soccer, college basketball and college football. As a kid, he collected football and basketball cards. In more recent years, he started collecting basketball cards again on a whim and has since expanded to other sports and entertainment options.

Curious to know… did they make both gold frame and black frame auto’s for ALL players in the autograph list? I’ve had a hard time finding several players autos in one of the two variations (examples: Cal Ripken Jr. gold frame? Corey Seager gold frame? Don Mattingly gold frame? Hank Aaron Black Frame? Ichiro Gold Frame? Mark McGwire gold frame? Mike Piazza gold frame?)

James, bottom right of the card behind the team logo, it’ll say which class it it. Very faint and hard to see but its there.

How do you tell the classes apart?

Where are the red labels from 98 and chase inserts

So, in a sad update to my October 22nd post, I returned my remaining two boxes back to my Local Card Shop (LCS) and received a refund. I’ll learn next time not to buy a Pre-Sale and wait until I can buy one pack to open. This way I’ll know I like the product.

Rateing-3/ This was a disappointment.Flimsy stock,no clear distinction between classes 1,2,3.This was advertised as having 35 cards per box.there are only 33 cards per box due to one auto per box. From 5 boxes I pulled an Olrerud 31/50,a Soler,a Dickerson,a Gegorius, and aPark RC for my autos.

A friend and I busted a case and four boxes of Gold Label. Fun break but like the posters said above, any autos of good players are very, very hard to find. We duped on the autos in the case and in the four boxes. Case hit if you can call it a case hit were both Jose Canseco autos. We hit three Carl Banks Jr autos in the case and three Alex Cobb so collation was beyond BAD. If I had to do it over again, I wouldn’t have bought near the boxes I purchased but I kept thinking it had to get better. It didn’t!!!! Maybe this should be a one star review after all????

The auto cards are beautiful, sadly the better players are much tougher to hit so expect a lot of Henry Owens, Aaron Nolas, and Hector Oliviera.

The base cards are lacking quite a bit. If you are looking for that old Gold Label feel, you will be highly disappointed. These are printed on normal stock and lack a quality feel.

Still not a bad break for $55 a box

Was looking forward to this product until I saw no tigers autographs on the checklist, and read reviews here. Pass. Chill on the Omar vizquel autographs topps!

Sorry, I should have rated the set lower. The only Gold Label “thing” about this was the Gold Label print.

Gold Label in name alone. The card stock is slightly better than base Topps. Someone should ask Topps why they decided to do that…my guess is “we’re cheap” will be the answer. Just another reason why exclusives suck.

For the first time ever with baseball cards, I bought three “pre-sale” Hobby boxes. I really loved the 2000 Gold Label; a classy, stiff, insert-like BASE card with different poses. Released on Friday (10/21), my excitement waned after opening the first pack. The cards are not like the previous versions, and they’re not even made like the Chrome cards. Maybe my expectations were too high. The consistency of the cards are made more like the current Bowman issues. One nice surprise were the cards of Hall of Famers embedded in the set. I pulled the Luis Severino framed auto, which looks nice. I’m ambivalent on whether I should open the other boxes or return them for 2016 Chrome. Honestly, had I known the product was the typical card stock, and not the hard plastic I expected Gold Label to be, I might have tempered my emotions and spent my money elsewhere. “Caveat emptor” – Let the buyer BEWARE!

Card Stock should have stayed glassy instead of plain semi foil. Frames could have been left off. My 2 boxes yielded RC autos of Trayce Thompson (nice) and Jerad Eichhoff ( Phillies :-(), serial RCs parallels #/100 of J. Urias and L. Giolito and Red #/25 J. Verlander…coulda been worse.

The cards are nice and look great with a nice double image on each card. I feel like it’s a decent set and will be a good collection for set builders. I’ve started to notice that there are alternate image variations within each “Class”. Does anyone know if there is an alternate image for every card in the set or if it’s a SP issue for select cards? The alternate image seems to be only in the background image where there is a home uniform picture and also an away uniform picture option.

Horrible product to big of a checklist nice on card autos but checklist names are far and between stick to singles. Multiple duplicate autos.

Framed AUTOS are beautiful but the base cards are very plain. Would have liked to see a better variety of parallels. I purchased two boxes from the same case and pulled 2 of the same autographes which is terrible. Both were Sean Doolittle. Smh

A word on Gold Label: I am VERY curious to see these framed autos, as the framed museums are among my favorite cards. I don’t expect them to be as high end, but looking forward to seeing them.

Thanks Trey, glad to see it’s not being marketed as a high-end product. Saw somewhere that the boxes would contain 7 packs but no mention on how many cards per pack. If I recall correctly, the inaugural issues contained 5 cards in hobby & 3 in retail and price point was roughly $1/card; I realize it was more than a decade ago and inflation kicks in but if Topps could produce a card of that quality then, there’s really no reason this new rendition should increase exponentially. Chrome has remained relatively stable with minimal cost increase over it’s lifetime, no reason why this should – unless Topps thinks the value added by a single guaranteed auto warrants mid-end pricing.

matt
matt

I’m going wait to see even a preliminary checklist before I get too excited for this product but I loved this set before. I’m glad that Topps didn’t try to make this a high end or single pack product like they seem to be doing with just about all their products. I do wish that there were going to be more hits in a box though.

Toby
Toby

Time will tell just how good or bad this product is. Gold Label was perhaps one of the most beautiful sets ever made and what made it even better was it’s SRP of $2.75/pack, although there were no autographs. If reasonably priced, this could be huge in popularity. This basically the same thing brought back to life and the inclusion of an auto cannot justify a high-end price.
