2016 Topps Five Star Baseball Cards

Product Details

User Rating:

Sitting firmly near the top of the high-end for baseball collectors, 2016 Topps Five Star Baseball maintains a commitment to quality designs and a premium format. Each hobby box features two autographs.

Echoing the price point, the all-autograph release is fully on-card except for the cut signature cards. Five Star Autographs contains top current players, former greats, and key rookies, with limited parallels such as Gold (#/50), Rainbow (#/25), Emerald (#/5), and Five Star (1/1).

Among the most popular inserts in 2016 Topps Five Star Baseball, Golden Graphs and Silver Signatures both offer up over 30 subjects that have signed in either gold or silver ink. Parallels include Purple (#/25), Blue (#/20), Green (#/15), Gold (#/10), Orange (#/5), and Red (1/1).

Heart of a Champion (#/25 or less) showcases those players that put forth notable postseason runs. There is also a one-of-one Inscription parallel.

Closing out the release is a trio of relic-based cards. Cut Signatures (1/1) features autographs from the all-time greats and even a few non-baseball celebrities while Silhouetted Batter Logo Patch Autographs (1/1) combines an on-card signature and MLB logo relic for 47 players.

Another key option in 2016 Topps Five Star Baseball, Autographed Jumbo Patches (#/25 or less) offers hard-signed content and a jumbo jersey patch. The insert includes 12 players as well as Gold (#/10), Rainbow (#/5), and Five Star (1/1) parallels.

Release Date: 10/5/2016

Product Review

2016 Topps Five Star Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Trey Treutel

Good: Better primary design, all cards are signed, more affordable pricing structure.

Bad: Base autographs are not numbered, checklist is not really high-end, huge gamble.

The Bottom Line: Long the pinnacle of high-end MLB cards for Topps collectors, Five Star is not the only premium set anymore and while the box pricing has come down considerably, the product is a shadow of its former self. Even with some big potential hits, the risk is very high for just two cards per box and a minimal selection.

Staff Rating:
2.8 / 5.0

Card Design: 3.5/5.0

Obviously design is very subjective, but I think that 2016 Topps Five Star Baseball improved on the main ’15 design. The darker background appeals more to me versus the white-heavy design of last year that looked cheaper.

Continuing to be some of the best inserts in the release, Silver Signatures and Golden Graphs maintain their quality appearance. They also benefit greatly from the striking silver and gold ink.

A clear disappointment in my eyes, the Autographed Jumbo Patch Relics design is extremely awkward. Even with the cramped signing area, these were some of the key hits in 2015 with the horizontal layout. Now, the extra space dedicated to the large swatch plus the vertical orientation has more the look of an unlicensed card that simply tucks the small player photo in the corner.

Checklist: 2.5/5.0

With so few cards per box and limited designs, the checklist is even more under the microscope in Five Star and it does not really deliver. Sure, there are some bigger signers but the overall quality is watered down with nearly 100 players and some real head scratchers at this price. There also appears to be a larger amount of redemptions.

Value: 2.25/5.0

With only two autographs per box at a cost of around $100, collectors must cross their fingers that the non-numbered hits likely to emerge even come close to the box price. Stripped of many elements that made the product a hit, the pieces are simply not there for consistent value and collectors instead are forced to rely solely on luck of the draw.

The Fun Factor: 3.0/5.0

The initial excitement of Five Star is quite short. Within seconds, you know if you either did okay or pulled $10-20 in cards from a $100 box. On lower-end sets with a greater emphasis on collecting value, it is easier to overlook the monetary box value. However, it is hard for Five Star to be about anything but monetary value. As such, the fun does suffer. Having said that, the quality stock and appealing look of the cards is still enough to get the juices pumping, especially if you actually hit something big.

User Reviews

Based on my purchase and what I saw opened at our local, this product is way more MISS than hit. Major gamble and not anywhere worth the price for the risk.

Wow, WHAT a fantastic product….. it WAS.

2012: 4 autographs, including a relic and/or booklet auto.
1 multi color non-bulls*** straight-up legit relic. What Topps now includes, in lieu of actual game-used mem’, is an embarrassment to the hobby:

The per box price for Five Star was up around $350-380, but the cards were magnificent. Some of the nicest, most unusual / rare cards in my collection hail from this formerly brilliant release.

Contrast the content dense product of ’12 against the reduced product above….sigh. Now, the vastly diminished Five Star yields just 2 hits …and they are NOT the caliber that they were in years past.

Topps has proven capable of releasing a superior product….they just appear to be dead-set on bending the customer over for every dollar.

Has to be the worst design I have ever seen on a sports card. And that is including 1992 Triple Play baseball. The cards look like giant postage stamps.
