User Rating:

Filling in the gaps from Series 1, 2016-17 Upper Deck Series 2 Hockey covers most of the missing players and rookie holdovers. The flagship UD set is again led by Young Guns, which fall six per box, and includes rookie star Patrik Laine.

Built around the base set and Young Guns subset (1:4 packs), 2016-17 Upper Deck Series 2 Hockey offers multiple parallels of varying rarity. Among these are High Gloss and Exclusive parallels along with hobby-only Clear Cut PETG parallels, averaging 1:3 boxes.

Adding to the base cards, UD Canvas also has a main set alongside a Young Guns subset. The base Canvas cards average 1:7 packs while Canvas Young Guns are more rare at 1:48 packs. Much tougher to hit are Team Canada POE (1:192) and Retired Stars (1:192) Canvas.

Although 2016-17 Upper Deck Series 2 Hockey skews more to the set builders, rare hits are also in play. Signed options include limited 1,000 Point Club Autographs (#/100) and Autograph Jerseys (#/10), UD Signatures (1:576 packs), and O-Pee-Chee Update Signatures (1:576 packs). A rare UD Canvas Autograph for Pavel Bure has only ten copies.

In addition, memorabilia hits include Rookie Materials (1:72 packs) and Patch (#/25), UD Game Jerseys (1:72 packs) and Patch (#/15), and 1,000 Point Club Jerseys (1:864 packs).

Young Guns may overshadow the other rookie inserts, but the first-year players also see additional coverage. Rookie Breakouts features acetate stock and a print run of 100 copies. Meanwhile, UP Portraits Rookies (1:6 packs) includes 50 subjects along with serial numbered Gold Foil (#/99) and Platinum Blue (#/25) parallels. A rare inclusion celebrating the '15-16 champs, Day With the Cup falls 1:1,000 packs.

Not just updating Series 1, 2016-17 Upper Deck Series 2 Hockey also brings collectors an update to 2016-17 O-Pee-Chee. This includes base Update and Rookies with Retro cards. Hobby-only Red Border parallels are joined by Rainbow Foil and Black Border (#/100).

3 boxes hardly any value. buying less and less upper deck product each year done for this year

Mark

I have debated so much over the last year and a half and have now realized it is too expensive to buy cases or boxes of series 1 and 2 to try to get one big hit. The distributor is the one who is screwing the hobby. Too bad Upper Deck could not just ship the product straight to the hobby store making it cheaper for the customer. The autographs are never good. I love the young guns collecting, but will now just wait a few months and buy on EBAY. The base set can be purchased or buy a few boxes at Walmart by retail.
I still have fun with O-Pee-Chee and O-Pee-Chee Platinum.

No word yet. It’s usually at least several weeks after the release but I have not seen a specific date.

let’s talk about interesting stuff. what do you guys think about the new case breaking. as an avid collector i think it will only raise the price of wax boxes. store owners are going to be putting
boxes away for case breakers that would normally go to the collector. store owners will allocate product to case breakers where they will make more money. so the hobby will be overrun with goof balls looking for the big hit.

these conversations are getting goofier all the time. now we have to worry about box breaker addicts.

I hope the guy who thinks he isn’t getting anything extra for buying hobby starts only buying retail, that way there will be more for me to buy. I wont have some gambler collector buying two boxes out of the case hoping for the big hit. us guys who buy the whole case or all the boxes until we get the laine hate you one and two box buyers. you guys should all move to case breaks. leave the boxes to us rich guys.

Larry
Larry

Watkins…I won’t hit the HG next year because I’m done wasting my $ on new product esp hobby boxes as it’s just a lottery. I like collecting sets and I don’t expect a big hit in every box but I do expect something different than retail ~ a base clear cut or base exclusives card for example. Not big hits but something different than retail. I’ve opened several boxes this year and got no cards exclusives to hobby; in fact, most of my retail pulls over the years have been better than my hobby pulls. You can laugh all you want but it’s not funny what’s happening to the hobby and a lot of people are becoming addicted and spending $ they don’t have on boxes and cases. I limit myself and buy cards I want on eBay or at shows. But it’s just a money grab now for UD and only the rich old men and online box breakers can afford to buy new product and ‘hits.’

HH I didn’t say I buy the box for 80$. I said the retailer buys it for that price. We often take the price we pay as the sale price established by UD, but we forget sometimes, myself included, that hobby stores must make a profit too. If we buy the box for 105$, the store buys it for around 80$.

Larry u buy hobby for a chance at hobby hit exclusives, high gloss, patch, acetate, signatures that u cant even get in retail not because u r gonna hit them in a couple boxes the odds r on the box just another person who dont understand the hobby and thrill of the big pull.

HH

Evan I can only find Panini and SP rookie for Pitlick. You’re right, if he didn’t have a YG yet, he won’t have one.

Brandon Davidson doesn’t have a rookie card yet that I know of but he has an OPC base card. You think with all the releases they could cover everyone.

T.C.B where do you buy a box of series 2 for 80.00 CAD? Where I live it was 105.00 last few years and the only reason they don’t jack the price up anymore is because of e pack. Every week series 2 used to be more than the previous week for bogus reasons.

Larry
Larry

TCB… I am not expecting a Laine or Marner YG or YG exclusives etc. But if Im paying the extra $ to buy hobby then I expect something unique in my hobby box. If it’s exactly the same thing as I could get in a retail box, then why pay the extra $? Yes I know it’s just a lottery and for those of us who can’t but cases, you take a chance. I collect the set anyway so anything extra is a bonus. I’m not expecting a crazy ‘hit’ but if there’s absolutely nothing exclusive in a hobby box then why call it hobby? My retail box was better than my hobby box and I decided to buy the Laine YG instead of buying a 3rd box as it was pretty much the same cost anyways.

Denton Edge

Did a case and hit a Laine YG /100 and a Matthews Canvas. Very pleased with this product, lots of numbered cards compared to last few releases. Very fun and affordable break!

T.C.B.
T.C.B.

Larry, it depends what you understand by hit in a Low-End product. Also, UD doesn’t advertise a hit by box. I always got in all my boxes what they advertise: at least 6 YG, 4 Canvas, 4 Portraits, etc. As I mentioned before, if you buy only a box, you can’t be sure you’ll hit Laine or Marner. The YG are equally distributed but there are 50 in the base set and only 6-7 in a box. If by hit you understand that in every box there should be a 100$ (Laine) card then we’re not on the same page here. Also, 105$/192 cards means 55 cents the card. Even then, the price for a store is around 80$/box, which means 40 cents the card. That’s Low-End for me. When UD needs to be criticized, I am the first to do it, but honestly I don’t know if that’s the case here, especially for the product not being a Low-End. I don’t pity UD. They make a buckload of money with other High-End crappy products. On the other hand we can discuss if 50 to 55 cents /card is a fair price or not. I don’t know the profit margins UD makes on a Series 2 box. Sure, they could be cheaper, but I only wanted to highlight that compared to other products, this one is indeed a Low-End.

HH Pitlick had rookie cards in 2013-14 but not ygs. He will be like Rust and Sheary never having a yg

HH
HH

Anthony – I don’t think Pitlick has a YG in 13-14. I don’t think he has a YG period. Maybe next year.

I believe a player only needs to play one game to have a YG card. There are no other rules except MONEY, MONEY, MONEY!

Why so many leafs? They have a lot of rookies and people in Canada love hockey. Cities like Toronto, Montreal and Edmonton to name a few love their hockey teams and hockey cards.

I would like to know how much of this product is sold on Toronto this year.

And the the higher price tag is because of the Canadian dollar. If dollar was even price would be very much like it was in 13/14.

Lots of great pulls in the case I opened, but my question to everyone is; Did anyone get any base cards that were not embossed? What I mean is on the front of the card, there is no Upper Deck logo, no name, no team logo, just the picture and the blue stripe where the logo and name are supposed to be. I must have about 100 of them from two of the boxes.

Larry
Larry

And if $109 plus tax Cdn~ to start ~ is low end then there’s another problem with the hobby.

Larry
Larry

I expect a hobby hit if I purchase a hobby box otherwise why buy hobby at all?

T.C.B.
T.C.B.

I don’t quite understand why people complain about this product. Of course there will be rookies that will not make the league, since in Series 1 and 2 there are 100 Youg Guns. It seems to me that Series 1 and 2 are always the same. Same cards, same subsets, same format, same odds. This shouldn’t be a surprise for anybody. During the last years it’s been 2-3 copies per YG per 2 cases, 1 or 2 High Gloss, 7-8 Exclusives, etc. etc. This is a regular low end product. Plain and simple. The prices too are generally the same every year, except perhaps the last one with Series 1 because of McDavid. Besides that, I don’t see any price/value issue with this product. Odds are decent. Of course, if you only buy a box or two you can either pull a Laine and sell it for say 100$ or some low profile and one or two decent YG. But that’s normal since there are 50 YG in the set, and you’ll get 8-9 YG/box. The YG are equally distributed and when I opened my cases I didn’t notice variations from a YG to another one. I pulled for example more Laine and Marner than other 2$-3$ YG. From time to time you can hit the big hit, but don’t expect a High Gloss Laine in every box.

Larry
Larry

I completely agree with Jumbo J. Bought 2 boxes and not one decent YG, no hobby hits at all ~ exclusives, HG, clear cut etc ~ and one YG meh canvas and 2 crappy game jerseys. I’m out $180 and prob have $30 worth of cards. I’m tired of gambling with UD and have bought my last box of cards. I will buy the cards I want on eBay or at shows. There is no value or fun in opening boxes anymore. This has been a very depressing year.

Jumbo J
Jumbo J

Meh hobby box break. The price versus value from what I saw just wasn’t there. I did pull a group A rookie materials card and that was the only highlight of the box (Marner). At such a high price point, I will be buying singles and spots in random group breaks. So many useless young guns and maybe 5 worth chasing.

Jammer
Jammer

Just so everyone knows, the clear cut cards have replaced the acetate young guns, they just gave them a name this year and included base cards in the set as well.

David, Matt Benning will be in SPA as an update.

Jerry
Jerry

So looking at the final checklist, There are some negatives. I do agree the YG selection is suspect, but looking at last years YG in S2, it was the same thing if not worse, and the boxes were the same amount, ya the McDavid hype was there but you had minimal cards on him, and most were SSP. UD seems to want decent players for the SP A update so you have to buy that product to get all the young guns. The hold on those YGs people have said above, had to be a plan from day one. That being said, kind of hard not to be upset with the YGs overall. When have we had two YGs over $100 in S2? Not to mention S1. Recoup is there for personal case breakers to resell. Look sure it’s a hobby, sure it’s all for fun, but to do it again, people need to try to recoup as best as they can to break even, to feed the addiction. It’s definitely a positive sign in this product. As on a personal level, there are some cool things you can get in S2.

So another negative is that Signature sensations are garbage. I know that autos aren’t the big pull from these products but just an added bonus, but man do they suck. Probably worst batch in a while. OPC signatures on the other had, look good as all the big names are there, tough to hit especially Matthews at 1:597 cases if my math serves me correct, but usually OPC signatures go for pretty decent on the secondary market, so that’s exciting for the overall prospects

Questions on if Clear Cut Superstars will be in S2 (was in S1 and S2 last year), and if S1 this year will have Acetate YG. I assume so, but probably no official checklist from UD to cardboard connection. But I think it’s safe to assume it’ll be in there, even though PETG is there.

Overall, I’m giving the checklist a 4/5. Some YGs are clearly fillers, I do agree some were a poor choice and Signature Senastions suck, but I can live with it and look past that because this product just screams value from all the hit possiblities that have decent return value.

Good luck to all busting on the 15th.

PGH
PGH

Conor Sheary unfortunately will never have a true Young Guns rookie card because his only true Rookie card was in last years Showcase product. Its limited to 599 serial numbered copies and is now very hard to locate and getting very expensive if you can find one at all. With the Penguins successful Cup run last season with him playing as well as he did at least Upper Deck could have included him in some of their other late products but they chose to limit it to Showcase only.

Been Young Guns since 11-12 season. UD really needs to reevaluate the way they select rookie cards

Series #1- Summer draft picks who made the team plus those who entered the league the previous year post mid season.

Series 2- High end draft picks plus those who entered the league past mid season last year to current mid season.

update- significant rookies who entered the league post mid season.

also increase the # of young guns. SP Authentic rookies offers 20 more than UD but they’re never sold as a set and half are autos so they’re heavily overpriced.

I think someone needs to clarify the regulations Upper Deck has to follow in terms of releasing rookie cards. If a player is deemed a rookie, does Upper Deck only have that season to release that players card? Also there is a cutoff date in terms of a player being eligible to be included in products for that season.

Myself, I don’t like the goalie rule where if the goalie dresses for a game, he is deemed eligible for a card. We saw this for Zachary Fucale last year and Thatcher Demko this year. Fucale still hasn’t played a game in the NHL and same with Demko.

Why are there so many Maple Leafs?
A couple I just looked up aren’t high draft picks nor played many games in the NHL. The only reason I can think of is they are highly touted prospects which many very well be as I know nothing of some of these players.

Best quality/price serie. Upper Deck do not decide who can be there. NHLPA submit list of rookie they can use. Honestly only 5-10 young guns have good value over time but I like to see good prospect. dont worry for missing one they will add em next serie.

And Bryan Rust had cards in 2014-15.

Good crop of Young Guns compared to last year Series 2. Awesome for Leaf Fans to collect. But price is a little high for this type of product shouldn’t be more then $80. If your not into the extra stuff you get in hobby boxes and just want the young guns best bet is retail since it is a little cheaper.

@Kenneth Mauax:

Connor Sheary has cards in 15-16 product but not much
Tyler Pitlick has cards in 13-14 product
Kristers Gudlevskis has cards in 14-15 product
Kieth Kinkaid has cards in 13-14 product

The rest of the players you mentioned will most likely be inserted as Young Guns in SPA as an Upper Deck update like they did the past 2 year.

Series Two is always a great product with the updating of rookies from other sets and having the advantage of seeing a lot more rookies make their debuts later in the season. Once again though UD seems to have dropped the ball in selecting their group of Young Guns. Not sure how they selected Tristan Jarry over Jake Guentzel (left Sheary and Rust out over the past year) and Lukas Sedlack plus a strong handful of others over the years not getting the nod. I get that UD now uses SP Authentic to make their Young Guns updates (Matt Murray last season) but for one of their most popular products to not have these guys is a major slip up.

I have been collecting serie 1 and 2 since 1990-91 cause it is the best ratio of veteran and rookie cards. NHLPA decide wich player can be add as Young Gun then UD decide wich one they want for the set. 50 is probably too much some time and many YG cards worth almost nothing but if they miss someone on the list they can always add him to the next serie. Hockey cards is a hobby, you shouldn’t think of resell to make profit beside if you are a merchant. For me Patrick Laine would be the only Young Gun inside it and I would be happy.

So, with the Series 2 YGs announced, that make 13 Leafs (11 YGs + 2 YG CLs) in both series. So if you’re a TML fan, then this is your year. If not, oh well. And for me, oh well. After a 26 year run of buying UD, I have yet to buy any S1, and I’m more closer to S2 than S1 at this point of the year- and it’s not looking good. Sorry UD.

OK, many players with 5 and less game, so interesting… UD, where the hell is rookie Lukas Sedlak, Columbus, who played 38 games? There is 0 cards so far in all UD products this year.
